The Sweet Service Award goes to Pepler Alarms and its owner Pieter Pepler. I visited my guest house in Franschhoek on a Saturday afternoon just before my overseas trip, and was surprised that I did not hear from Pepler when I set off the alarm in error. I had Pieter’s cell number in my phone, and called him instead of the control room in error. He sent a staff member over within an hour, coming through from Paarl, to replace the battery.
The Sour Service Award goes to Robben Island, for its English-only communication, despite the visitors predominantly being tourists, who are not all able to speak English. Two of our guests from Germany returned disappointed from their trip to the island, in that every word spoken is English, that the posters and photographs depicting the history of the island are in English, and the books sold in the shop are all in English too, which meant that they could not take anything with them as a momento of their visit to Robben Island! Germany is one of our largest tourism source markets!
The WhaleTales Sweet & Sour Service Awards are presented every Friday on the WhaleTales blog. Nominations for the Sweet and Sour Service Awards can be sent to Chris von Ulmenstein at whalecot@iafrica.com. Past winners of the Sweet and Sour Service Awards can be read on the Friday posts of this blog.
