South African exports into Africa are growing, says Wines of South Africa (WOSA) Africa head Matome Mbatha.
Angola is importing 6 million liters of wine, of which more than 80% is sparkling wines, and predominantly JC le Roux, a brand they are ‘crazy about‘, Mbatha says. The 4,5 million liters of Nigeria’s imports from our country are mainly Pinotage and Merlot, red wine being popular despite the heat in the country!
Other popular wine export countries are Uganda, Kenya, and Ghana, all countries currently or planning to produce oil in Africa. Wine exports to China increased by 30% in the past year, despite the economic growth of that country having slowed down.
South Africa is the 7th largest wine-producing country in volume, and makes up 4% of global wine production. Wine exports from our country have declined by 20%, to 423 million liters, between 2013 and 2014.
