BusinessTech reports that President Cyril Ramaphosa called American President-Elect Joe Biden two days ago, focusing on how the two leaders can strengthen African and American ties, and overcome the Corona Pandemic. Our President wished Biden and Vice-President-Elect Kamala Harris well for their term of Office, due to start on 20 January 2021.
Biden visited South Africa in the ‘Seventies, and was arrested when he tried to visit the late Nelson Mandela in prison, The New York Times reports.
Other topics that were discussed during the phone call included curbing corruption, the recovery of the international economy, and climate change.
In his media statement, President Ramaphosa expressed his confidence about a strong relationship with a USA led by President-Elect Biden. He stated:’President-Elect Biden and Vice-President-Elect Kamala Harris have identified Africa as a major player in international affairs and in the advancement of multilateralism’.
Commenting on Biden’s visit to our country in the ‘Seventies, Ramaphosa said that he ‘demonstrated his commitment to human rights and dignity for all South Africans’. Biden praised the achievement of a democratic South Africa, it is reported.
Africa was not on the American radar during the reign of President Trump. It will be a welcome change to see Biden and Harris take over the White House in January 2021.
