The Sweet Service Award goes to Hartlief in the Garden’s Centre, for its friendly staff in the cold meat section and at the till, noticing when once has not shopped there for a while (for dietary reasons). On my last visit I was warned that their droëwors was drier than usual, and I was given a piece to try. Compared to its Constantia Branch, and Continental Butchery on Kloof Street, it is the most pleasant and least expensive German Deli to shop at in my experience. One can pre-order telephonically, one’s order being ready and waiting when one arrives!
The Sour Service Award goes to Deus Café in Hout Bay, an establishment which was once the home of Kronendal. On a hot long weekend afternoon I chose to stop there for an ice coffee and cake treat, it having the best confectionery in town, but terrible service. I went into the Patisserie section, selected what I wanted, but was not allowed to order there, being told that I had to be seated and order from a waiter. No one arrived. A manager person arrived, and I asked him if someone could take my order. He sent a waiter to confirm the order, having forgotten to tell the waiter about a glass of water. As it was shift change at 15h00, that waiter left and a new waiter Megan arrived, bringing no water, the wrong ice coffee, and the Chocolate Mousse Cake in a take-away box and a chocolate eclair on a plate, exactly the opposite to what I had ordered. I couldn’t handle having to wait even longer, so I accepted the take-away mix up, and received another iced coffee, which didn’t taste like any I’ve had before, not tasting the coffee nor the ice cream! In addition, no member of staff wore a mask! When I addressed it with the manager, she apologised, she got everyone to put on their masks!
