At a Gala Event held in Paris on Monday, the new La Liste 1000 for 2022 was announced, with 12 South African Restaurants included in this prestigious list of 1000 top restaurants around the world, one sadly included but no longer operating!

In addition, brand new Restaurant Klein JAN at Tswalu in the Kalahari, owned by Chef Jan-Hendrik van  der Westhuizen, received a special Award as World Hidden Gem Restaurant. While his JAN restaurant in Nice has been awarded one Michelin star for the past six years,
it is not included in the La Liste List.  The La Liste accolade for Restaurant Klein JAN, and its inclusion in the world’s Top 1000 List, is the first international recognition for any of Chef Jan-Hendrik’s restaurants.

La Liste scores are based on the number of mentions of restaurants in guide books, publications, and online reviews.

Japan has the most restaurants in the Top 1000 with 143 restaurants listed, followed by China with 139 restaurants, the United States with 111, and France with 109.

Restaurant Mosaic in Pretoria ranked in 2020 Top 200 Restaurant La Liste, top ranked SA restaurant!

The Top South African Restaurants on the 2022 La Liste are the following, listed in order of their ranking, and with its score out of 100:

#   La Colombe in Constantia, Cape Town: 85,50

#   Chef’s Warehouse (which one in Cape Town is not specified) :  84,50

#   Greenhouse at The Cellars-Hohenhort, which sadly closed down in November. 84,50

#   DW-Eleven 13 in Johannesburg: 84,00

#   Wolfgat in Paternoster : 83,00

#   Camphors in Somerset West: 81,50

#   Indochine at Delaire Graff, Stellenbosch: 80,00

#   The Pot Luck Club, Woodstock in Cape Town 80,00

#   Nobu, The One & Only, V&A Waterfront:  78,00

#   Restaurant Klein JAN at Tswalu: 76,00

#   Signal at the Cape Grace in the V&A Waterfront m 75,50

Some comments about the SA restaurants recognised:

1.  FYN restaurant surprisingly is missing from the List
2. Wolfgat interestingly is not top of the list, being the best performing SA restaurant on the 2022 World’s 50 Best Restaurants List.
3. Nobu is a surprise on the above list
4. Signal has not operated for most of the past 20 months as the hotel was not open.
5. Chantel Dartnall’s Restaurant Mosaic outside Pretoria used to be the best performing SA Restaurant on the La Liste. She closed her restaurant doors earlier this year, and has moved to France, where she will open her new Mosaic restaurant.
6. The Test Kitchen and Waterkloof would have been on this List, had they not closed down earlier this year.
7. Nobu, Restaurant Klein JAN, Signal, and Jordan are new SA entrants to the List.

Chef Jan-Hendrik’s team toasted the success of Restaurant Klein JAN on Instagram, writing that when he opened a dining establishment in the Kalahari he could not have foreseen the impact that Klein JAN would have, and that a proudly African restaurant based in the heart of the Kalahari being recognised globally is the cherry on top!
