* A trade union of European air traffic controllers is threatening to strike at all airports in Europe on 10 October.
* Are the days of the wine sommelier coming to an end? With 100 Master Sommeliers in the USA alone, they are finding it tougher to find jobs, as restaurants move away from fine-dining to more relaxed and informal dining.
* Four South African wines, out of a total of 32, were named International Trophy winners at the 2013 Decanter Wine Awards in London earlier this week, a total of 14000 wines having been entered: Ghost Corner Sauvignon Blanc 2012 (best Sauvignon Blanc over £15), Cape Point Vineyards Isliedh 2012 (best White blend over £15), Boschendal Reserve Collection Syrah 2011 (best Red Rhône under £15), and Paul Cluver Gewürztraminer 2012 (best Dry Aromatic under £15). Australia won six International Wine Trophies, and Chile and Spain four each.
* The wine industry has focused on four key trends in the past twenty years: terroir, production, distribution, and empowering the wine buyer to feel confident about the wines they are buying.
* National Colour Week drew to a close today, and numerous events have been held to celebrate colour. trendtalk#6 was held at the Freeworld Design Centre in Cape Town, and Catherine Bowen presented her predictions on trends in fashion for 2014, being ‘an exceptionally clean silhouette (gone are any extraneous accessories, the lines and the fabrications, while prints take centre-stage), graphic print and pattern (these range from horizontal and vertical stripes, to checks, to Art Nouveau style geometric patterns, to crisp digital prints) and a bold, bright use of colour (monochromatic pairings and colour-blocking seemed to feature in almost every collection)’. The late 1920′s and 1930′s fashion is also on the silhouette of 2014, she writes.
