*   Etihad Airways has been named as World’s Leading Airline for the sixth consecutive year.   Ecuador was named as the World’s Leading Green Destination.

*   The Robben Island ferry Sikhululekile has experienced regular damage in the Island’s harbour at low tide from an ‘underwater rocky outcrop’, a survey conducted by the Council for Geoscience has found.  Purchased at a cost of R26 million, the ferry was not tested for suitability inside the harbour prior to purchase!  Now the Robben Island Museum is looking to sell the ferry.

*   The Stellenbosch American Express Wine Routes has launched a Wine Tourism Visitor Centre at 47 Church Street, offering coffee, winetastings, free wifi, and information. (received via media release from Random Hat Communications)

*   The City of Cape Town has announced its safety plans at its amenities, announcing the deployment of 250 trained lifeguards at Cape Town beaches from 10h00 – 18h00.  This service will be boosted by lifesaving clubs on beaches.  A further 218 lifeguards will look after 36 public pools.  The City has asked that pool and beach users assist the lifeguards by looking after their children, and to only swim in designated areas.  A number of safety tips at beaches and pools have been listed.

*   Shopping centre owners and tenants are feeling the load of loadshedding, the weekend focus (Stage 3 this past weekend meant power outages three times a day on Friday and Saturday) affecting shopping on weekends. This past weekend Eskom justified the loadshedding on building up water and diesel reserves, to generate enough electricity for businesses this coming week. However, the loadshedding continued today, albeit at Stage 2, necessitating only one loadshed during the day.  A week ago Eskom promised the last of loadshedding for the month!  Shopping centre turnover revenue has been affected, as has been parking income, as shoppers shop elsewhere to not get trapped inside a parking garage.   A retailer federation, with members such as Edgars, Mr Price, Queenspark, Foschini, Truworths, and Woolworths, is demanding the government’s turnaround plan for Eskom.
