Woolworths trended on Twitter this past weekend, when a spoof video featuring its new design spokesperson PharrellWilliams went viral. The spoof video is by BDS (Boycott, Diversity, Sanctions), which clearly states that its video is not authorized by Woolworths nor by Williams.
Using the original video made in April for Woolworths’ announcement of its new collaboration with Williams, and perfectly synced, the spoof video encourages its viewers to #BoycottWoolworths and to #BoycottPharrell, for Woolworths importing products from Israel.
The reaction to the video is interesting, in that it had high viewership this past weekend, a News24 article about it receiving more than 300 likes, and more than 200 comments on Facebook. The comments are overwhelmingly positive, many commenters writing that they are even more encouraged to support the retailer after seeing the video, and cannot survive without Woolworths for their purchases.
The launch of the spoof video coincided with protests at larger Woolworths stores around the country, including the one in the V&A Waterfront.

One wonders how Williams will react to being drawn into the BDS controversy about Woolworths. The retailer has as yet declined to comment about the spoof video!
