‘Penguin Town’ Netflix documentary puts Simonstown on the map (again), nominated for 6 Daytime Emmys!

Following hot on the heels of the documentary ‘My Octopus Teacher’ winning an Oscar for the South African and Cape production in 2021, a new local documentary ‘Penguin Town’ has been nominated for six 49th annual Emmy Daytime Awards.

The Film has been nominated in the ‘Outstanding Travel, Adventure and Nature Program’ category, one of five contenders in the category. It has also been nominated in the ‘Outstanding Music Direction and Composition’ (with the theme song ‘Pushin’ On’ composed by Cape Town’s The Kiffness), in ‘Outstanding Single Camera Editing’, in  ‘Outstanding Sound Mixing and Sound Editing’,  in ‘Outstanding Daytime Program Host’, and in the ‘Outstanding Cinematography’ categories. Celebrating World Oceans Day today 8 June: ‘The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods’

World Oceans Day today (8 June) has a special significance for me, given my dedication to cleaning up litter in Camps Bay, and in organising a monthly Camps Bay Community Clean up. My goal is to prevent as much of the litter on the pavements, lawns, and walkways at the Camps Bay Beachfront from flying into the Atlantic Ocean.

Artist and sculptor Francois Knoetze’s   ‘This is Plastiglomerate’ is a well-timed artwork which has recently been erected on Camps Bay Beach to draw attention to the danger of plastics to our environment, World Environment Day having been celebrated last week.

The Labia Cinema celebrates World Oceans Day with a screening of ‘My Octopus Teacher’ today.

World Oceans Day is celebrated in South Africa too, and forms part of June being Environment Month.

Monday 26 April 2021, Day 57 of Level 1 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a cooler day, rain forecast to fall tonight; for surviving a short night’s sleep, ‘watching’ the Oscars on Twitter until I fell asleep early this morning; for two more sleep catch ups; for a very busy morning, busier than usual, with phone calls interrupting my work, when I thought everyone took the day off today 😱; for two walks today, a shorter Bakoven one with Vivian Warby, and a longer uphill power walk up Houghton Road; for a lovely tea meet with Adrienne Jacobson, a fellow Camps Bay resident; for lovely service from a shelf packer at Woolies, when I asked him what I should buy for my soup, recommending carrots, green beans, and butternut; and for being happy, healthy, and free 🙏💙. Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a lovely day, at 22 C, the wind blowing since this afternoon; for reaching a compromise solution in my second challenge carried over from yesterday; for a walk to Clifton and back, earning 300 Discovery points; for a good Zoom meeting for our Camps Bay Ratepayers Committee meeting, especially happy that the Camps Bay Tidal Pool is one of three to receive a decorative upgrade to educate Pool users about fish and sea life, a request which I had made to Councillor Nicola Jowell soon after we met about one and a half years ago, I wanting a no-litter message included 🙏; for replying to a message from a bully I had received quite some time ago, proud of standing up to him 😡; for being very happy to receive a meeting request later this week 💙; and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙 Continue reading →
