Corona Virus: Lockdown Journey Journal, Day 52 of Level 3, 22 July 2020.

Wednesday 22 July 2020, Day 52 of Level 3, after 66 days of Levels 5 and 4 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a slightly cooler day at 18C, but perfect for holding the peaceful protest of the Restaurants around the country; for the amazing start to my day, receiving my Tourist Guiding registration confirmation and copy of the card at 7h45, and for so many messages of congratulations ❤️❤️❤️; for getting my writing done in time to walk to the participating Camps Bay restaurants, all ready to place their tables and chairs out onto the street at 12h00 sharp; for getting back home in enough time to get to Free Range jewelers at 13h00, and then meet Jenny Stephens at the Green Point Urban Park at 13h30 for a walk followed by tea, and then making the dentist for the continuation of the root canal treatment and a temporary crown; for buying food for Minsky, she lapping up her pellets and favorite sauces for an evening treat, and another multipack box of Smarties, enough to last for another month, the Pick n Pay order finally having arrived; for receiving a Gameboard play and winning 150 Discovery Miles; for Discovery covering the costs of a temporary repair of the storm damage too, an unbelievable insurance company; and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

Exhibit A in Cape Town the first Fine-Dining Restaurant to close down due to the Corona Lockdown!

We’re very sorry to announce the permanent closure of @exhibit_a_by_syn
Unfortunately, the ANC and refusal to use our tax money for the good has led to us having to close our doors for good. We hope that they all sleep soundly in their stolen homes, with their expensive cars bought with stolen money. As for us, we’re done funding this circus of lies, blame and denialism. It took a pandemic to wake us up to a very real and very old problem.
To our loyal guests, we apologize and appreciate your support as always, but enough is enough.
It’s been epic SA 🙌🏻🌶💚
Bye for now 😜’

With this angry message on Instagram and Facebook Chef Rikku O’Donnchü announced the permanent closure late last night of his fine-dining restaurant Exhibit A, which had traded from the Villa 47 building on Bree Street in Cape Town. Continue reading →

SŸN Pop-Up Proudly South African in its Heritage Day Lunch Tasting Menu, presents a taste of what is to come when the new restaurant opens on 1 November!

Since my return from a three month trip to escape our winter, my number one newly-opened restaurant on my list to visit in the Cape was SŸN, the pop-up having opened whilst I was away, and headed by Chefs Rikku Ó’Donnchü and Warwick King, formerly of Gåte restaurant at Quoin Rock. The one-day special Heritage Day Menu (at R690) was the perfect opportunity to taste and see what these two creative chefs and their team have come up with since setting up on their own, initially as a Pop-up before they open their new restaurant on 1 November. Rockstar chef team leaves Gåte Restaurant at Quoin Rock wine estate, set to open new doors in Cape Town!

Two weeks ago I heard a whisper about Gåte Restaurant at Quoin Rock Executive Chef Rikku O’Dönnchu and Head Chef Warwick King having left the restaurant that was destined to become South Africa’s number one restaurant in November this year, and was receiving international acclaim in the short time that it has operated since November 2018. Yesterday the news about the departure was confirmed by Quoin Rock as well as by Chef Rikku.

The chef team, operating as the SŸN Group, has announced that it will open a new restaurant in the Cape Town city centre by November.  Continue reading →
