Restaurant Review: Firefly Café in Camps Bay is no longer flying, shocking service!

When Firefly Café opened in Camps Bay just over a year ago, I was apprehensive about the future of the coffee shop, its service levels being variable, it taking me more than three months to write a review, feeling more confident about its future.

When co-owner Herman Bezuidenhout, who was often in the Café and with whom I enjoyed chatting, left Firefly Café and sold his shares to his business partner Luzaane Spoelstra, my confidence dropped to rock bottom and I did not return for at least four months, until a week ago! What a bad mistake it was! Continue reading →

Corona Virus: Lockdown Journey Journal, Day 42 of Level 1, 11 November 2021

Thursday 11 November 2021, Day 42 of Level 1 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#grateful for a lovely day, with great weather at 23C and good energy; for Loadshedding from 8h00 this morning turning my day upside down, but what fun to meet the irreverent Lin Sampson at Firefly Café for an interview for Daily Maverick Food, and being able to get tea using gas-cooked boiled water; for a quick catch up hello with Charlene Shapiro who drove past; for getting my client work for today completed without panic, for Henry doing a fabulous job in obtaining or chasing quotes for maintenance/repair jobs at our Ebbtide apartments, a list of ten which I compiled Continue reading →

Restaurant Review: Firefly Café in Camps Bay is a unique neighbourhood refreshment station, starting to fly!

Firefly Café is a most unusual Café in Camps Bay, which opened in September. Expecting a coffee shop from the initial description, it opened with a tiny open -plan kitchen, serving largely dishes with air-fried chips, with coffees and teas too. I have visited the restaurant regularly, and have only two dishes which I would order there.

After some trial and error, it is flying now, and seems to attract an increasing number of patrons, locals in the main.  Continue reading →

Corona Virus: Lockdown Journey Journal, Day 40 of Level 1, 30 October 2020.;

Friday 30 October 2020, Day 40 of Level 1, Day 218 of Lockdown 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a record unbroken sleep of 8 hours 🙏; for another day of abundance; for a sunny day, slightly warmer than yesterday, but chilly now as the South Easter picks up; for a promising response to a Camps Bay Beach Clean tomorrow; for being able to get a website glitch of my new client fixed today; for tea with the always entertaining George Sax at Firefly Café; for a challenging walk, uphill to Camps Bay Drive via Geneva Drive, the 300 Discovery points well worth the huffing and puffing; for achieving 1300 points in the past week, the most in a week ever, with only 8000 points still needed to get to Diamond; for an efficient Commissioner of Oaths stamp by the Camps Bay police station; for the delivery of a new Boston Distillery Gin with Hops gift 🙏; for dancing to Kfm; and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙

The Sweet Service Award went to Woolworths, and the Sour Service Award to Pick n Pay Camps Bay.

Sweet Service Award goes to Woolworths; the Sour Service Award goes to Pick n Pay!

The new Boston Distillery Gin with Hops is small-batch artisanally handcrafted in Cape Town with Amarillo Hops. The gin contains five botanicals: coriander, orris root, liquorice, cardamom, and Angelica, with the zest of lemon, orange, and grapefruit. 🙏

I’ve now learnt that while I must reach the minimum number of steps to gain any Discovery points, exerting myself for one hour per day, instead of two half hours spread out over the day, earns me a minimum of 200 points, and if it is an uphill walk it goes up to 300 points. It’s taken me a long time to work out 😱👣.

My Apple phone required a software update to version 14.1. Oh my goodness, a whole new phone. Many of the Apps have disappeared from their usual location, and are now in an ‘App Library’, all on one page. Why do they need to change things that work and don’t need to change?

Early to bed to watch TrumpFlix …. 😱😂😂😂

The Corona Virus Lockdown (Level 5), announced by our President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier to commence on 27 March and to continue until 16 April, subsequently extended to 30 April, lowered to Level 4 from 1 May, lowered to Level 3 from 1 June, lowered to Level 2 from 18 August, and lowered to Level 1 from 21 September, is an unprecedented event in my lifetime. I am posting my daily Facebook post to journal this Corona Lockdown Journey, perhaps to serve as material for a future Book.
