Top 10 Women Chefs in Cape Town and the Winelands: 2022


For the third year running we are acknowledging female chefs heading up restaurant kitchens in Cape Town and the Winelands.

Started during Lockdown in 2020, as a celebration of Women’s Day, the Top 10 Women Chefs List highlights how few top restaurants have female chefs in their kitchens in general, and even fewer have women chefs heading up the restaurant kitchens.

Restaurant Review: Hazendal Avant-Garde The Russian Tea Ceremony a South African inspired High Tea with a Russian flavour!


Two weeks ago I needed to drop off a prize to Hazendal Executive Chef Michelle Theron, one of the 2021 Top 10 Women Chefs of the Cape. My road trip partner was Gary Peterson.

A mere 36 minute trip from Camps Bay via the R300 led us to a gem of more than a wine estate, not having visited it before. It contrasts the 300 plus year history with modernity through the use of glass structures. Continue reading →

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#grateful for a slightly warmer day today, at 14C; for a working day, only breaking it with a walk to Pick n Pay, where I met our new Store Manager, the Italian Domenico, which can only be good news given the poor service we have had to endure for ages; for a company contracted by the City of Cape Town trimming all the palm trees along Victoria Road, until late afternoon, and even removing the palm fronds 👏👏👏; for a Bakoven walk tagged on, to increase my step number before I dance the balance to Kfm’s Blokparty; for Zest receiving two reviews on the Cape Town Restaurants: the Good, Continue reading →

Meet Chef Michélle Theron of Hazendal: 2021 Top 10 Woman Chef!


Hazendal Executive Chef Michelle Theron is a busy lady, running five restaurants on the spectacular Stellenbosch wine estate, which I visited for the first time last weekend.  Unfortunately I was unable to meet Chef Michélle, as she had already left after preparing breakfast for guests renting the Hazendal Homestead.
