Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Gratitude for a lovely sunny day, but with a strong wind blowing now; for an organized writing morning and meeting preparation; for Minsky returning home at 8h00 this morning after galavanting for 12 hours, being very worried about her and sleeping very badly; for a very quick walk through Bakoven and its lanes, too short a walk to make any impact with Discovery; for returning to Labotessa CafĂ© which I discovered last week, having a breakfast lunch; for a good first Status meeting at Anatoli; for a meeting with Juanita Levetan, a member of the Sea Point, Fresnaye, Bantry Bay Ratepayers & Residents Association, exchanging experiences about cleaning litter in Sea Point and Camps Bay; for a partly nerve-wracking Live Cook Channel cooking of pan-roasted prawns and hake, with linguine and a fennel crĂšme, designed by Chef Reuben Riffel; for topping up petrol at BP President on Regent Road, only needing a third of a tank added, happy that Michael was on duty, a fabulous petrol attendant; for two Discovery Gameboard plays, one generating 500 points, and a total of 675 between the two, allowing me to buy a Woolies R100 voucher; and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

Food blogger in ‘Death Cup’ murder mystery by Irna van Zyl modelled on WhaleTales Blog!

Last week I found a reference to my name in a review written about author Irna van Zyl’s second book, called ‘Death Cup: Murder is on the menu’, a play on words with a mushroom by the same name, naming me as the model for one of the main characters in the book, as the writer of the ‘infamous food blog’. As I had been told this verbally on another occasion too, I had to go to Exclusive Books to buy a copy of the book. There is no mistaking the blog of the ‘food blogger’ as being my WhaleTales Blog! JHP Gourmet Guide announces 2020 top restaurants, but does not release the list until January 2020! Read it here first!

The publishers of the Gourmet Guide 2020 have made it really difficult to write this post, in that it is not revealing its full list of 36 restaurants that received its one, two, or three plate awards on Monday, until January 2020, its website states. One can surmise that it wants the Gourmet Guide 2020 to be bought so that it can generate income. By January these Awards will have long been forgotten! Continue reading →

New Restaurant openings in Cape Town and Winelands for 2019/2020 season slow down dramatically: October 2019!

The poor economic conditions in our country currently is manifesting in the very few new restaurants opening for the new summer season, most such new openings usually taking place in September. Where many new restaurants are opening, they are changing the name and concept of existing ones, rather than being brand new, or adding other restaurants in a restaurant group’s portfolio. 

Two exciting top-end restaurant openings are those of Exhibit A (owned by highly acclaimed Chef Rikku O’DonnchĂŒ and Chef Warwick King, who left GĂ„te restaurant earlier this year), opening in the city centre on 1 November; and of La ChĂȘne at Leeu Estates in Franschhoek.
