* Newton Johnson Cellarmaster Gordon Newton Johnson has been admitted to the Cape Winemakers’ Guild as its 46th member. It recognises his achievements as winemaker of Pinot Noir in particular, and winning this year’s Platter’s Red Wine of The Year. Membership is by invitation only. * ‘Festive Franschhoek’ runs until Tuesday, and is intended to attract Capetonians and tourists to come and do their Christmas shopping in Franschhoek rather than in manic Cape Town. Shops such as Peacock Blue, Indian Summer, Masquerade Antiques & Things, and Troll Beads will stay open until 20h00, misleadingly marketed as ‘late night shopping’! Misleading too is the invitation to ‘Enjoy a five-star meal at Reuben’s...’, the restaurant only having made a 4-star rating in the Diners Club Rossouw’s Restaurant Guide this year, irresponsible overmarketing by Mariette du Toit-Helmbold of Destinate, running the promotion! One suspects that all participants had to pay her company for the promotion!

* Miss South Africa, Rolene Strauss, has won Miss World 2014, a wonderful marketing opportunity for our country!

Cape Town weather Sweet Service and City of Cape Town Traffic Services Sour Service Awards!

The Sweet Service Award goes to the weather in Cape Town in the past ten days, which has been picture perfect, putting on its best face to give the thousands of holidaymakers a fantastic time in our beautiful city. As a guest house owner in Camps Bay, which gets badly hit by south-easters which can exceed 120 km/hour and can intimidate visitors not familiar with such strong wind speeds, we have been delighted, as our guests have been able to enjoy the beautiful view by sitting on our terrace for breakfast, and we have easily been able to get our laundry dry without fear that it blows away! The forecast rain is to return just as the bulk of Festive Season holiday-makers leave Cape Town on Sunday! Continue reading →

We are delighted to have been included in the ‘100 Great SA Travel Twitter Feeds‘ list, which was compiled by travelstartblog. The list of 100 top Travel Twitter feeds follows below, in no particular order the blog states, based on the following selection process: ‘To formulate our list, we first had to decide on a few criteria we feel make a travel focused Twitter feed exciting. This isn’t an exact science, but with the help of a few online tools such as Twitter search and our own observations, we’ve been able to arrive at a fairly inclusive list. Active participation on Twitter was a significant part of the selection criteria, as was location (South Africa), number of followers as well as social authority’.

* The Free World Design Centre in Cape Town is hosting trendtalk#6 on 3 September, with the theme ‘the colour of the times’. It forms part of National Colour Week, which runs from 1 – 7 September. Key presenters will share the latest design and décor trends. Entry is free of charge. The trendtalk#6 speaker panel includes journalist Les Aupiais, fashion stylist Catherine Bowen, and colour trend forecaster Anne Roselt. (via media release from Free World Design Centre)
