The Department of Labour has announced the new Minimum Wages for the Hospitality Industry, for the period 1 July 2010 – 30 June 2011, a 7,5 % increase over the previous twelve month period.
The new Minimum Wage for employers with 10 or less employees is R1981,48, the weekly minimum rate is R457,30, and the minimum hourly rate is R10,17.
Employers that have more than 10 employees must pay a minimum wage of R2209 per month, R509,83 per week and R11,33 per hour.
The minimum wage rates are calculated by adding 1 percentage point to the current inflation rate of 6,5 %, and is therefore the lowest wage increase since the Sectoral Determination for the Hospitality Industry was promulgated in 2007, setting minimum wage rates for the first time for this sector.

Dont know how people get by even on that increased salary. The rich will just keep on getting richer on the back of these poor workers.
Thank you for your view Pete. What I find so surprising is that those that have jobs do not stick with them. Staff walk out without reason or concern for the financial implication, knowing that their social and family network will look after them until they have a job again. Most of us employers do not call the references, nor check up on this before employing new staff.
The fish shack in the paddocks milnerton does not register its staff pays no basic no commision on sales only tips poor guys working 12 hrs sometimes for R100 please tell me this is illegal

It is absolutely illegal. A tip is not part of a compensation package, it is a ‘bonus’. All staff must be full-time employed, and must be paid at least the Minimum Wage of about R 1900 per month. Any tips on top of this are for the benefit of the employees.

My son works in a restaurant. He earns R 7.00 per hour. The kitchen staff gets R6.30 an hour. No one has any contract and gets hired and fired at the owner’s whims and discretion.I am overseas and he is really struggling to make ends meet. how can I get someone to have a look at this restaurant? it is a well know franchise in a ig shopping mall…Kind Regards
Hi, i may sound rather un-educated considering i’ve been in the hospitality industry for going on 10 years now, but i was always under the impression that minimum wage differed between waiter and bar staff. Am i correct? And if i am what is the minimum wage for bar staff? Thanks.
