Walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain is a very spiritual experience, transversing many pilgrimage routes, leading to the ultimate destination of the shrine of the apostle St James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Two movies dealing with walking the Camino will be screened at the Labia Theatre next weekend, in aid of StreetSmart SA.

On Saturday 6 May at 13h45 ‘The Way‘ will be screened, starring Martin Sheen. The movie was released in 2010. Film director Emilio Estevez described his movie as ‘pro-people, pro-life, not anti-anything’.

On Sunday 7 May at 16h00 ‘Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago’ will be screened, and is described as an ‘inspiringly beautiful travelogue’. Released in 2013, the documentary captures the essence of walking the spiritual way, including walking 500 miles of the pilgrim path, sleeping in bunk beds, having blisters on one’s feet, experiencing beautiful landscapes, coping with all weather types, enjoying kindness from strangers, ‘unexpected romance’, hunger, making new friends, grief, and a spiritual awakening for many.

The Camino is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and has been walked by pilgrims for over 1000 years. It is walked by more than a quarter of a million pilgrims each year. In early days, the Walk was the way in which pilgrims sought forgiveness of their sins and admission to heaven.

StreetSmart SA is dedicated towards helping street children rebuild their lives through public donations with the support of a network of restaurants throughout the Western Cape and Gauteng. It is a registered Public Benefit Organisation as well as a Non-Profit Organisation, and funds are primarily raised by participating restaurants adding a voluntary R5 donation to each table’s bill. Monies raised go towards social and educational upliftment projects for street children.

Camino de Santiago movies, 7 and 8 May. Labia Theatre, Cape Town. R40 per ticket.
