Thursday 8 October 2020, Day 18 of Level 1, Day 196 of Lockdown. 😷
Corona Gratitude 🙏
#Grateful for another sunny day, but a little cooler at 19C; for another lucky day this week; for a busy writing day, only finishing my Blogpost this afternoon, exceeding 2000 words; for a midday breakfast with friend Jenny Stephens at Firefly Café, and returning the borrowed potato peeler to Tindlovu; for a second walk, to Bakoven, extending the walk further than usual, past the last block of apartments, where someone told me that a fence is badly broken, looking like the result of a car accident; for being spoilt with a massive Christmas-come-early delivery from Mynhardt Restaurant in Paarl ; and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙
Fine-dining reviews always take longer than any other Blogpost, so the 15-course Tasting Menu story about the Secret Supper Club by Homespun by Matt took extra long. But I loved writing it, the cleverness of what we experienced on Monday evening becoming even clearer, taking a step back three days later. Owner and Chef Matt sent me the sweetest message : ‘Mit Tränen in den Augen!!! Im at total loss for words🤭 I need a moment to gather my thoughts after that incredibly beautiful piece you wrote’. I don’t often receive such a compliment from chefs. 😱
Jenny kept her breakfast at Firefly healthy, ordering scrambled egg on chickpea flatbread, while I had a poached egg on sourdough toast, with avocado. We sat outside, but it was quite noisy.
The Mynhardt box arrived early this morning, decorated on the outside with Christmas decorations. It was a Fruitcake, accompanied by the ingredients which were used to bake the cake: KWV 10 year old brandy, Sasko self-raising flour, Moir’s vanilla essence, and glazed cherries, Montagu raisins, sultanas, fruitcake mix, almonds, and dates. A packet of Renosterbos filter coffee was in the box too. Lots of information was included in the goodie-box too, which I need to work through. #Thankyou to Mynhardt Restaurant.
It’s sad to hear of yet another restaurant closure, Viande at Grande Roche in Paarl, announced by Chef Pete Goffe-Wood today.
The illegal occupiers of a Camps Bay AirBnB have checked out after almost two weeks, following a court order.
It’s started drizzling already, a strong South Easter lying ahead. Temperature drop, down to 15 C tomorrow.

The Corona Virus Lockdown (Level 5), announced by our President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier to commence on 27 March and to continue until 16 April, subsequently extended to 30 April, lowered to Level 4 from 1 May, lowered to Level 3 from 1 June, lowered to Level 2 from 18 August, and lowered to Level 1 from 21 September, is an unprecedented event in my lifetime. I am posting my daily Facebook post to journal this Corona Lockdown Journey, perhaps to serve as material for a future Book.
