After having skipped the release of the World’s 50 Best Restaurant List in 2020, due to the Corona pandemic, the 2021 World’s 50 Best Restaurant List is back.
The closure of The Test Kitchen on Thursday means that South Africa may no longer have a presence on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants List, only La Colombe and The Test Kitchen, both under the ownership of Chef Luke Dale Roberts, having received the prestigious accolade of having made this list in the past. The 2021 World’s 50 Best List will be announced on 5 October.
Luckily the World’s 50 Best has a bubbling-under List, the World’s Restaurants ranked from 51 to 100 already having been announced. Cape Town’s La Colombe and Fyn restaurants have made it onto this list.
La Colombe in Constantia has made the World’s 51 – 100 list previously, having been ranked at number 114 in 2019, when the last List was announced. In 2019 S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurant sponsor celebrated its 120th anniversary, and therefore the bubbling-under List was extended to 120 top restaurants. This year La Colombe is ranked at number 81, a big jump.
Fyn Restaurant makes the list for the first time, at rank 92, its owner Chef Peter Tempelhoff being ecstatic. The restaurant opened in late 2018.
The World’s 51 – 100 lists a number of restaurants I ate at in Lima and in Rio de Janeiro in 2019:
67: Oteque, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, a big jump up the list
85. Lasai, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, slipping down the list
95. Kjolle, Lima, Peru, first time on the list
96. Astrid y Gaston, Lima, Peru, slipping badly from number 67 in 2019.
Restaurant Review: LimaLove Tasting Menu Lunch at AstridyGastón an exceptionally lucky experience!
