I was invited by Marina Nestel of The Little Black Book to attend the official opening of Crumbs & Cream on Regent Road in Sea Point this evening, a unique outlet selling ice cream sandwiches which began trading a week ago.
Crumbs & Cream belongs to two Israeli sisters Or (meaning light) and Shahar (meaning dawn) Peled, who each had their own careers, but like each other so much that they decided to start a business together once they started their families. They researched their market around the world, and designed a unique concept of the ice cream sandwich, choosing two cookies (they can be different), an ice cream flavour, and the resultant ‘sandwich’ is placed inside a folded paper packet, so that one eats it like a hamburger, without it messing. The ice cream sandwich costs R35.
The Cookies are baked fresh in the outlet throughout the day, and need an hour to cool down. Flavours are Banting, Vegan Heaven, Red Velvet, Candy Crush, Oreo, Rainbow, Choc Chip, and Brownies. Gelato flavours which were in the shop today were Choc Mint, French vanilla, Special (a special coconut Bounty I selected), Sugarfree (for an additional R4), Ferrero Rocher, Snickers, Granadilla Mango sorbet, strawberry cheesecake, and Caramel Crunch. The Gelato is supplied by Icezeit, and flavours are made especially for Crumbs & Cream, and supplied weekly. There will always be a Special flavour, a Sugarfree one, and a sorbet. For an extra R5 one can add a spread of Nutella, peanut butter, or Dulce de Leche. For another R5 extra one can order a topping of Smarties, white choc chip, cookie crumbs, or Oreo.
The two charming sisters raved about their location on Regent Road, and see great things ahead for its development in Sea Point. They told me that one can order ice cream only, for R25 in a cup or cone. A cookie can also be ordered separately for R12, or in larger quantities for events. They have had a branded trolley made for events. One can also order deep-frozen ice cream sandwiches. When they open earlier from next week, they will offer a Coffee and Cookie for R30.
The interior is decorated in fun colours, with an indoor swing, and a couch with colored scatter cushions, at which one can eat one’s ice cream sandwiches at Crumbs & Cream!
Disclosure: Or Peled handed me a box with Crumbs & Cream cookies on my departure.
