Lockdown Restaurant closures in Cape Town & the Winelands now at 100! More than 70 new restaurants have opened in the past year!

The Level 1 regulations introduced on 1 March, with a restaurant closing time of 23h00, and the serving of alcohol being permitted since February, have been a boost to the local restaurant industry, one of the hardest hit industries since Lockdown started a year ago, with good bookings in the past two months.

Despite the Lockdown regulations affecting the restaurant industry so badly in the past 13 months, a total of 75 new restaurants have opened in Cape Town and the Winelands during Lockdown. Restaurateur Michael Townsend Continue reading →

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a calm and peaceful day, well-organized, with a little time squeeze around midday, but it all worked out perfectly; for another special beautiful day, at 23C; for getting my writing work done in good time; for a power walk on my secret Bakoven path, getting 300 Discovery points, just a few steps away from my halfway goal; for collecting my rolls at Dinkel, and some cold meats at the Continental Butchery on Kloof Street, making it to my meeting on time; everything is up to date at Utopia, and I am very excited to have just doubled Utopia’s Instagram followers since I took over the Utopia marketing less than 5 months ago; for a visit to the Waterfront, excited to buy a new iPad Air at Apple, five generations ahead of my very outdated one, the one on which I do all my writing 😱; for a shop at Woolies Waterfront; and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙

My Blogpost today was about the opening of Chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen’s Restaurant KLEIN JAN at Tswalu Private Game Reserve Kalahari, owned by the Oppenheimer family. Amazing reader interest in this Blogpost.

Chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen finally opens his Restaurant KLEIN JAN in the Kalahari, most expensive restaurant in SA!

I start my day with a read of my Sag Horoscope. Bizarre how yesterday it referred to a woman in business, and the phrase ‘out of the blue’. Could not have been more apt, and how amazing! Referring to Diane Armstrong of Out of the Blue!

The Corona Virus Lockdown (Level 5), announced by our President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier to commence on 27 March and to continue until 16 April, subsequently extended to 30 April, lowered to Level 4 from 1 May, lowered to Level 3 from 1 June, lowered to Level 2 from 18 August, lowered to Level 1 from 21 September, and moved back to Adjusted Level 3 from 29 December,  extended to 15 February on 11 January, extended but relaxed on 1 February, and relaxed back to Level 1 on 1 March 2021, is an unprecedented event in my lifetime. I am posting my daily Facebook post to journal this Corona Lockdown Journey, perhaps to serve as material for a future Book.

New restaurants open, one Restaurant Closure, in Cape Town and Winelands since March! April 2021

The Level 1 regulations introduced on 1 March, with a restaurant closing time of 23h00, and the serving of alcohol being permitted since February, have been a boost to the local restaurant industry, one of the hardest hit industries since Lockdown started a year ago.

Despite the Lockdown regulations affecting restaurants so badly in the past 11 months, a total of 70 new restaurants have opened in Cape Town and the Winelands during Lockdown. Top chefs have opened new restaurants, including Chefs Peter Tempelhoff, Cheyne Morrisby, and Liam Tomlin. Chef Cheyne’s HIMITSU at the Camps Bay Retreat is one of the newest restaurants to have opened. Cape Town’s oldest pub, the Perseverance Tavern, has reopened with new owners. Restaurateur Michael Townsend has finally opened his grand Grand Pavilion in Sea Point.  Chef Michael Broughton has opened Cucina in Stellenbosch, and plans to open The Stud Burger, Ember, and a Tapas and wine bar, all in Stellenbosch, and all in conjunction with Brenaissance Wine & Stud owners Tom and Hayley Breytenbach. Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for another beautiful summer day, again close to 30 C in the city; for surviving the day on 3,5 hours of sleep; for getting my work done in time this morning; for an entertaining hour with Garth Angus of Wagyu Direct, giving him a crash course in Social Media; for collecting my poppyseed rolls at Dinkel; for a good Status meeting at Utopia; for the luck of getting great coverage in Cape Town Etc for Anatoli; for a shopping spree at the Waterfront, wishing I hadn’t; for a less energetic stroll to the Camps Bay Pick n Pay, getting some groceries I had intended to get in the Waterfront; and for being healthy but tired. 🙏💙 Continue reading →
