Corona Virus Lockdown: StreetSmart encourages home diners to ‘Dine In. Do Good!’ to fund the support of street children!

 

StreetSmart SA, a Public Benefit Organisation which collects monies from R5 donations paid by patrons at participating restaurants, has been affected in doing its good work in caring for Street Children by the Corona Virus Lockdown, as no restaurants have been permitted to trade in the past two months.

In order to continue its good work, needed even more so during these difficult times, the organisation has launched an interim ‘Dine In. Do Good!’ campaign, encouraging home diners to donate R150 per month (R5 per day), or even more to StreetSmart SA until restaurants reopen. Continue reading →

Corona Virus: ‘Racist’ criteria for support from Tourism Relief Fund leads to AfriForum court action against the Department of Tourism!

 

In following a number of topics related to the Tourism industry, and being a member of the industry as a recently qualified Tourist Guide whose income has ground to a halt, the Tourism Relief Fund offered to the Tourism and Hospitality industry as financial relief during the COVID-19 pandemic is of special interest to me. Earlier this week the Department of Tourism was sent court papers by civil rights organisation AfriForum, for its alleged discrimination based on race in its funding criteria. Industry talk also is that the Fund benefits larger formal tourist companies, and does not provide relief for hundreds of informal freelance operators such as Tourist Guides, the unofficial face of South Africa, in showing international travelers the highlights of our country. Travel makes a recovery, and beach holidays are back on trend!

Camps Bay beachA survey conducted amongst 20000 travel agents by Benchmark Hospitality International in the USA has culminated in the ‘Top Ten Travel Trends for 2014′.  Good news is that travel bookings are on the up, and that beach holidays are on an upward trend too!

The results were as follows:

1.   80% of the travel agents were optimistic about travel growth, half of these expecting it to be ‘very strong’.

2.   Most growth will come from leisure travel, and half of this from the luxury segment.  However, leisure and business travel often is combined.

3.   An increasing number of clients are booking directly, understandably of concern to travel agents.

4.   Beach-related travel is showing the strongest growth, responsible for about half of all travel. The balance of Continue reading →
