The secret is lifted: Himitsu closes down at Camps Bay Retreat after tumultuous year!

Himitsu, meaning secret in Japanese, opened quietly and secretly at the five star Camps Bay Retreat Boutique Hotel just over a year ago, Chef Cheyne Morrisby taking over all the Food & Beverage requirements for the guests of the hotel, a first for Morrisby, who by then already had a number of restaurants in Hout Bay and in De Waterkant.

After an explosive Sour Service Award I awarded to Himitsu Restaurant for a shocking breakfast experienced there in January, and it coming to light that Morrisby had not been to the Camps Bay restaurant in four months, Morrisby announced a week ago that he has closed down Himitsu at the Camps Bay Retreat. Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for another beautiful summer day, again close to 30 C in the city; for surviving the day on 3,5 hours of sleep; for getting my work done in time this morning; for an entertaining hour with Garth Angus of Wagyu Direct, giving him a crash course in Social Media; for collecting my poppyseed rolls at Dinkel; for a good Status meeting at Utopia; for the luck of getting great coverage in Cape Town Etc for Anatoli; for a shopping spree at the Waterfront, wishing I hadn’t; for a less energetic stroll to the Camps Bay Pick n Pay, getting some groceries I had intended to get in the Waterfront; and for being healthy but tired. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

12 Apostles Sweet Service and Spill Brand Communications Sour Service Awards!

imageThe Sweet Service Award goes to the Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa and its Food & Beverage Manager Hilton Ruch, who assisted me in getting a table inside the CafĂ© Grill, when the staff had said that only outside tables were available. He also personally made two dry cappuccinos for me, and then offered to find a slice of chocolate cake, which offer I did not decline! When I requested the bill, the staff said that it had been taken care of! I have been impressed in the past with Hilton walking the hotel’s restaurant and bar floors, checking on all the facilities it offers.  Continue reading →

Soccer World Cup 2014: where to find the screens, snacks, and Schnapps!

Cocoa Ola World Cup flags Whale Cottage PortfolioThe Soccer World Cup 2014 has kicked off, and one would have thought that Cape Town restaurants and pubs would have shown more ‘gees’.  We have only seen one restaurant on Kloof Street ‘advertising’ its soccer allegiance, with three flags on the outside of Cocoa Oola   In general the soccer event appears to be a damp squib for locals.  A number of restaurants are offering free viewing, some with special menu items that reflect the countries playing on the day.

Check the closing times of the restaurants and pubs before choosing them, as their licence will influence how late they are allowed to stay open. It is surprising how hard it is to find Soccer World Cup 2014 information on the websites of those restaurants and bars attracting soccer fans. We will update this list as we find new information about offers linked to the Soccer World Cup 2014:

*   Mondiall – this restaurant is commendable in being one of the most creative and focused on the Soccer World Cup 2014.  Each day it chooses a lead game, offering a tapas dish and a main course from the countries, with a complimentary drink,  of each of the two teams playing each other on the day, at a cost of R180.  For today, for example, with Germany playing Portugal, the German tapas dish offered is potato soup with crispy pork and chives, while the main course is Bratwurst, and the complimentary drink a CBC Weiss.  The PortugueseMondiall Baked Camembert tapas is peri peri chicken wings, the main course a prego roll, and the complimentary drink sangria. The country dishes for the chosen matches over the next ten days are as follows:

17 June:   Brazil versus Mexico

18 June:  Spain versus Chile Continue reading →
