New restaurants open, one Restaurant Closure, in Cape Town and Winelands since March! April 2021

 

The Level 1 regulations introduced on 1 March, with a restaurant closing time of 23h00, and the serving of alcohol being permitted since February, have been a boost to the local restaurant industry, one of the hardest hit industries since Lockdown started a year ago.

Despite the Lockdown regulations affecting restaurants so badly in the past 11 months, a total of 70 new restaurants have opened in Cape Town and the Winelands during Lockdown. Top chefs have opened new restaurants, including Chefs Peter Tempelhoff, Cheyne Morrisby, and Liam Tomlin. Chef Cheyne’s HIMITSU at the Camps Bay Retreat is one of the newest restaurants to have opened. Cape Town’s oldest pub, the Perseverance Tavern, has reopened with new owners. Restaurateur Michael Townsend has finally opened his grand Grand Pavilion in Sea Point.  Chef Michael Broughton has opened Cucina in Stellenbosch, and plans to open The Stud Burger, Ember, and a Tapas and wine bar, all in Stellenbosch, and all in conjunction with Brenaissance Wine & Stud owners Tom and Hayley Breytenbach. Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a lovely day, warmer than forecast at 27C; for a very busy working day, the short week making itself felt; for a very short and sweet nap this afternoon after only 3 hours of sleep last night, energizing me to do a Bakoven and Camps Bay walk, spoilt with a lovely sunset, and 300 Discovery points, the first ones since Wednesday last week; for a call from Emily O’Ryan who promised me another follow-up interview for her book; and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

De Vleispaleis Grillroom & Bar adds a Fine Meat Deli to its Restaurant, introduces R199 Set Menu!

 

On Saturday I had my second meal at De Vleispaleis on Dorp Street in Stellenbosch, having first dined at the Grillroom and Bar in December.

A number of changes have been made since then to the menu, a Fine Meat Deli has been introduced, and a 4-course R199 Set Menu launches on Thursday 1 April. Continue reading →

Saturday 27 March 2021, 1st anniversary of Lockdown, 27 th Day of Level 1 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a long day focused on Foooood, and mainly spent in Stellenbosch; for rain that fell overnight and light rain on the way to Stellenbosch; for a Brie and egg purchase at Dalewood Fromage outside Franschhoek, my favorite farm shop with excellent service always; for a quick walk in Church Street, not being able to resist the fabulous ice cream at Crème de Levain; for discovering Eike restaurant and its Snoepie (Tuck Shop) off Dorp Street, buying a Tex bar for R2 less than the price at Pick n Pay 😊; for a lovely spoiling lunch at De Vleispaleis on Dorp Street, belonging to my friend Stuart Bailey, trying the new Set Menu which starts next week from 1 April, and meeting his new dog baby Max; for a visit to Stellenbosch Square, shopping at Woolworths, finding a nice fitting pair of shoes but with poor service, with long queues at the tills; for getting back to Peppertree Café on Kloof Street just in time to collect figs I’d ordered; for a walk through Bakoven; for a visit to Anatoli, trying and photographing new dishes made by Chef Jacques du Toit, and photographing Beth the belly dancer ; for my cat babies forgiving me for leaving them at home alone all day; for it being so quiet in our building, half the renters spending the weekend elsewhere 👏; and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙 Continue reading →
