Beloved Carte Blanche presenter Derek Watts passes away.

Today Derek Watts, the well-known, respected, and loved Carte Blanche TV presenter, passed away. He was 74 years old. He was a presenter for 35 years.

News 24 writes, quoting his long-standing fellow presenter Ruda Landman:

‘Carte Blanche started in 1988, and although it was a difficult and tumultuous year, the changes were inspiring and filled with hope. We were always live in the studio, and I was always relaxed with him next to me. Nothing could faze him. Nothing caught him off guard and unaware’.

‘He was always ready. His jokes always caught me off guard. We were different personalities, meaning the show had a wider range and reached more of our viewers in their hearts, ‘she said.

Last year, Watts was diagnosed with skin cancer that then spread to his lungs’.

I met Watts in 2020 when he investigated the story about the misleading marketing of the SA Butler Academy, brave former student of the Butler Academy Lin Yang having alerted the Carte Blanche producers to the shenanigans of the Butler Academy.

As I had written about the misleading marketing of the Butler Academy on this Blog in 2013, Ms Lin, a past student, and I were interviewed. As it was during Covid, the interview with me was filmed at my home in Camps Bay.

Derek struck me as a kind and gentle person, making me feel relaxed before and during the interview. The Carte Blanche program highlighted the lack of credibility of the SA Butler Academy and its owners.

My condolences go to his family. May he RIP.

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#grateful for a deep but too short sleep; for getting into writing mode early, doing my first ever sponsored posts for my client which all went well, being slightly nervous; for a lovely morning tea and Xmas cake treat with Gary Peterson, airdropping the video he did of the Carte Blanche program to my phone, watching it with him; for receiving a detailed timeline breakdown of everything which Singaporean Lin Yang has been through with the SA Butler Academy, in time for me to add it into my Blogpost about the Carte Blanche program of last night; for all the lovely compliments about the program; for a quick walk to Bakoven, where there was lots of litter to clean up, the same applying to Camps Bay later this afternoon, looking terrible with all the litter in the Tidal Pool area; for a quick drop in by Emma, bringing me a gift of inflatable solar lights; and for being healthy but tired. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

Carte Blanche exposes SA Butler Academy Marketing deception, first exposed on WhaleTales Blog in 2013!

Seven years ago I wrote a story about the South African Butler Academy, and its marketing deception, having had the poor experience of employing one of its Butler graduates in my Whale Cottage Camps Bay, which I owned at the time. Yesterday Carte Blanche took up the story, highlighting my story of seven years ago, as well as that of Lin Yang, a Singaporean student, who was expelled from the Academy a year ago for being late one morning, and who is unable to get her money back. Once again, the deceptive marketing of the SA Butler Academy was evident when its management was interviewed by Carte Blanche presenter Derek Watts. Continue reading →

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a cooler day, at 23C; for being relaxed, despite having to do some writing work for my client; for having Carmen assist in the litter clean up today, when Imtiaz was sent home, not feeling well after yesterday’s busy day; for there being fewer picnickers in Camps Bay today, but the litter did escalate by late this afternoon; for some first lovely compliments about the Carte Blanche investigative report into the SA Butler Academy, even though I have not seen it myself, not subscribing to DSTV ❤️; and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙 Continue reading →
