TANG Waterfront opens in Cape Town with a glamour bang!

 

TANG Waterfront opened in Cape Town on Thursday, about a year and a half after the opening of TANG Sandton, with a premier grand event which included dancing to Grammy Award winning DJ Black Coffee and a Chinese dragon ensemble.

TANG describes itself as an Asian Luxury Restaurant and Bar, and is owned by Nicky van der Walt, a former Capetonian who now lives in Johannesburg. The restaurant name stems from the Tang dynasty which ruled China from 618 to 907. Continue reading →

Hospitality Counsel names 2022 Restaurant Luxe Award winners!

 

 

 

 

The first Restaurant Awards of 2022 were announced in Johannesburg by the Hospitality Counsel a week ago, with a handful of Cape Town restaurants and chefs recognised in their 2022 Luxe Awards.

Speaking to one of the organisers of the Awards a year or so ago, it appeared that Cape Town chefs and restaurant owners were not keen to fly to Johannesburg at their own expense to receive the Awards, and hence the Johannesburg restaurants dominate these Awards, of which 25 were presented, eight going to Cape Town Restaurants. It may explain why three restaurants in the La Colombe Group received four awards this year. And why Chef Luke Dale Roberts received three awards, as the event was hosted at Ethos Restaurant, where he is the Consultant Chef.   Continue reading →

Restaurant Business picks up and new Restaurants to open in Camps Bay, no closures other than The Test Kitchen !

 

With the country at Level 1 since last week, optimism is high, and business in the restaurant industry is improving.  Despite the dreadful impact on restaurants of Level 4 during July, no restaurants appeared to have closed, other than The Test Kitchen and Ocean Blue in September.

Chef Luke Dale Roberts retains Fledglings and Pot Luck Club in Cape Town, and is moving his attention to Johannesburg, consulting to Ethos, and opening The Shortmarket Grill there. Continue reading →

Very few recent Restaurant openings and closures in Cape Town and Winelands: September 2021

 

Despite the dreadful impact on restaurants of Level 4 during July, no restaurants appeared to have closed.  By the end of September Chef Luke Dale Roberts will have closed all his restaurants. He will consult to Ethos in Johannesburg.

Chef Bertus Basson is on a continuous Restaurant opening spree, having opened Geuwels at Vergenoegd Löw in Stellenbosch at the beginning of this month, with Chef Drikus heading up the kitchen. It is open Wednesdays to Sundays, for Breakfast and Lunch. Continue reading →
