Cape Town and Winelands see host of new restaurant openings: December 2020 update!

 

Cape Town and the Winelands is experiencing a restaurant boom, with new openings currently as well as openings announced for 2023.

The biggest restaurant opening extravaganza is that of JAN Franschhoek, the third restaurant in the JAN Restaurant Collection, opening at La Motte in Franschhoek. La Motte is undergoing a major renovation and changes at its wine estate, with a Bread-related Café & Deli opening  in the La Motte Manor House in February 2023. Chef Chris Erasmus is working with La Motte as a consultant, until February. July 2022 Restaurant Update: Cape Town and Winelands, new re-openings!

 

New restaurants are still opening, or planning to open, in Cape Town and the Winelands, despite it being Winter.

The biggest recent restaurant opening has been by Chef Liam Tomlin, who opened The Bailey, a three storey Brasserie, Bakery, and two Bars across the road from Heritage Square. He has closed down his Chefs Warehouse on Bree Street. Ouzeri also opened last month.

Restaurant Artizian will open on Bree Street in August. Chef Peter Tempelhoff is said to open a Japanese Street Food restaurant on the ground floor of Speakers Corner, the building in which FYN operates, in September. Restaurants offering Sit-Down service in Cape Town and Winelands in Lockdown Level 3: a First List!

 

On Monday restaurants were allowed to reopen for Sit-Down Service, after having only been allowed to offer a Food Delivery service from May, and a Food and Alcohol Delivery and Collection Service from June onwards.

I have been requested to prepare a list of Restaurants offering a Sit-Down Service, in addition to the Facebook Group which I created of Restaurants offering Food and Alcohol Delivery and Collection. Restaurants allowed to reopen for Sit-Down Service from today, but do they really want to? Many will wait for Alcohol Sales to be allowed and/or for Summer!

 

Today is a day of excitement as well as disappointment for restaurateurs, who have so looked forward to reopening their doors for a Sit-Down Service. The official reopening date is today, but sadly it appears that many restaurant doors will remain closed, restaurateurs citing the prohibition of serving alcohol with a meal, and this being the quietest time of the year for restaurants as the reasons why they will not reopen now, continuing with their Food and Alcohol Delivery and Collection Service.
