Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a cooler day, rain forecast to fall tonight; for surviving a short night’s sleep, ‘watching’ the Oscars on Twitter until I fell asleep early this morning; for two more sleep catch ups; for a very busy morning, busier than usual, with phone calls interrupting my work, when I thought everyone took the day off today đŸ˜±; for two walks today, a shorter Bakoven one with Vivian Warby, and a longer uphill power walk up Houghton Road; for a lovely tea meet with Adrienne Jacobson, a fellow Camps Bay resident; for lovely service from a shelf packer at Woolies, when I asked him what I should buy for my soup, recommending carrots, green beans, and butternut; and for being happy, healthy, and free 🙏💙. Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a peaceful easygoing day; for it being warmer than the 18C forecast, cloudy with rain forecast for tomorrow and Tuesday; for a Social Media morning; for reading about ‘Nomadland’, tipped to win Best Picture at the Oscars early tomorrow morning, having to go and see it at The Labia; for a lovely coffee ice cream at Unframed on Kloof Street, the World’s Best Ice Cream Parlour; for a quick speed power walk when I got home, just as the sun was setting, beautiful sunsets from Camps Bay Drive and Geneva Drive, lucky to get my 300 Discovery points; for buying two last boxes of figs from Peppertree CafĂ©, the fig season finished now; and for being happy, healthy, and free. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

Veritas Awards: KWV, Spier, and Nederburg lead the ‘Oscars of the SA wine industry’!

Veritas Wine top achieversKWV, Spier, and Nederburg are our country’s top three wine estates based on the number of Double Gold and Gold Awards they received at the 2014 Veritas Awards Gala Dinner at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on Saturday evening, making up almost half the 51 Double Gold awards. The Veritas Awards are viewed as the ‘Oscars of the South African wine industry‘, with close to 1800 wines entered, a slight decrease on the number of 2013 entries.

KWV was announced as the Best Wine Producer for the fourth year running, and increased its Double Gold awards from four last year to seven this year.  KWV also won 2 Double Golds for its Brandy.  Spier has greatly enhanced its Veritas performance, with 7 Double Gold awards, compared to only one last year. Nederburg increased its Double Gold tally from four last year to six.  Flagstone won Best Performer in the less than 10 wines entered category, and the KWV won in the 11+ wines entered category.

Christiaan Groenewald of New Cape Wines Diners Club Winemaker of the Year 2013!

Diners Club Christiaan Groenewald Whale Cottage PortfolioLa Residence pulled out all the stops in hosting the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year 2013 Awards last night, seating and serving 150 guests in its massive entrance hall, lounge and dining room, demonstrating why it was recently voted joint Best Hotel in the world by Conde Nast Traveler.  The Awards evening was described as ‘a gathering of wine aristocracy’, and the ‘Oscars of the Wine Awards’! The Diners Club Winemaker of the Year Award is the only award given to an individual, and is even more special in that it is received in the presence of an audience of experts and peers.

Gareth Cliff of 5FM was a good MC, admitting his ignorance as a wine drinker, and doing a brilliant Julius Malema impersonation based on wines (with Ed Morton and Nick Solomon of La Residence in the photograph below).  As the venue was so large, video screens were set up throughout the venue, allowing each table to see  a screen close by.  A Twitter Feed ran on the screen, Cliff being a heavy Tweeter, which will have pleased his hosts at Diners Club Ed, Gareth Cliff Nick Whale Cottage PortfolioLa Residence and Diners Club, with his 571343 Twitter Followers.  Diners Club Winemaker of the Year 2013 Finalist Johan Jordaan from Spier was an informative and fun table neighbour, as was Franschhoek Tatler editor Siegfried SchĂ€fer and  Helgard van Schalkwyk from Lynx Wines.  Johan was an excellent ‘lighting assistant’, in lighting my plates with his phone to photograph the food!
