‘Penguin Town’ Netflix documentary puts Simonstown on the map (again), nominated for 6 Daytime Emmys!

 

Following hot on the heels of the documentary ‘My Octopus Teacher’ winning an Oscar for the South African and Cape production in 2021, a new local documentary ‘Penguin Town’ has been nominated for six 49th annual Emmy Daytime Awards.

The Film has been nominated in the ‘Outstanding Travel, Adventure and Nature Program’ category, one of five contenders in the category. It has also been nominated in the ‘Outstanding Music Direction and Composition’ (with the theme song ‘Pushin’ On’ composed by Cape Town’s The Kiffness), in ‘Outstanding Single Camera Editing’, in  ‘Outstanding Sound Mixing and Sound Editing’,  in ‘Outstanding Daytime Program Host’, and in the ‘Outstanding Cinematography’ categories. Corona Virus: Lockdown Journey Journal, Day 14 of Level 1, 4 October 2020.

 

Sunday 4 October 2020, Day 14 of Level 1, Day 192 of Lockdown. 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a wonderful day all round, the weather superb, my first Lockdown brunch, and my first dancing at La Parada Constantia Nek since the beginning of Lockdown; for the City of Cape Town coming to collect the broken glass this morning just as I went for a walk, happy that I could express my thanks to the staff personally; for fetching croissants from Maison J, having pre-ordered them; for feeling far safer in Camps Bay today, with 10 Law Enforcement Officers, two traffic police cars, and a Metro Police car proactively present in Camps Bay; for a wonderful Heritage Brunch at my home, lasting six hours, the second longest one ever; for the happiness of going back to La Parada Constantia Nek, seeing so many people from the pre-Lockdown dance nights there, yet it was so different, with minimal dance space, but the highlight was The Kiffness playing; for surviving a taxi overtaking me in a curve of the road and scraping my car on my way home, but not seeing any damage to my car (yet); and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

Tuesday 29 September 2020, Day 9 of Level 1, Day 187 of Lockdown. 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a relaxed unstressed day, my Resting Heart Rate dropping even further; for a 17C sunny day on the slightly chilly side, especially when the South Easter picked up this afternoon; for writing an interesting story about the new Daily Maverick 168 newspaper; for seeing Henry again after he had five days off; for a littered walk through Camps Bay, lots to pick up; for fabulous service from the Pick n Pay Manager, to refund an overcharge on a cash payment, not having kept the slip and finding it via my Smartcard swipe ❤️; for a second walk to Camps Bay to have dinner with Vivian Warby at Tindlovu in Camps Bay, serving South African cuisine; for an amazing call just received (21h00) from the City of Cape Town Water Department to establish the exact location of a water leak on the Victoria Road pavement, which I reported to the office of Nicola Jowell earlier today, to fix it tonight, a huge wow 👏; and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

Launch of Daily Maverick 168: from daily online into weekly print during Covid Lockdown – does it make sense?

 

I am a daily scanner of Daily Maverick, receiving the daily online newsletter in my email inbox, reading the headlines, and opening those stories for further details which attract my attention. For a daily digital publication going into a weekly newspaper during Corona Lockdown, after begging daily for financial support from its digital subscribers, nothing about the Daily Maverick 168 makes sense to me!
