Sunday 4 October 2020, Day 14 of Level 1, Day 192 of Lockdown. 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a wonderful day all round, the weather superb, my first Lockdown brunch, and my first dancing at La Parada Constantia Nek since the beginning of Lockdown; for the City of Cape Town coming to collect the broken glass this morning just as I went for a walk, happy that I could express my thanks to the staff personally; for fetching croissants from Maison J, having pre-ordered them; for feeling far safer in Camps Bay today, with 10 Law Enforcement Officers, two traffic police cars, and a Metro Police car proactively present in Camps Bay; for a wonderful Heritage Brunch at my home, lasting six hours, the second longest one ever; for the happiness of going back to La Parada Constantia Nek, seeing so many people from the pre-Lockdown dance nights there, yet it was so different, with minimal dance space, but the highlight was The Kiffness playing; for surviving a taxi overtaking me in a curve of the road and scraping my car on my way home, but not seeing any damage to my car (yet); and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙

The City of Cape Town staff brought a canvas sheet, and wore thick gloves to pick up the glass shards, putting them onto the canvas and then hoisting it into their truck. They helped turn the Pedestrian crossing sign to face in the right direction too. 🙏

The Heritage Brunch was one intended for the Heritage Day weekend, but all the previous Sundays have not been ideal weather-wise for an outside Brunch. It was one of the strangest brunches in the number of last minute cancellations, but then there were two last minute ‘walk in’ additions, making for interesting conversation, as no one knew anyone else. Each guest brought a typical Heritage dish: Mark Cromhout koesisters, Piet van Zyl Melktert; Johnny Nortje a self-made potato salad with olives, capers, and gherkins, paired with my Viennas, and Lynne Gordon a salted caramel cheesecake…… mmmm. We did the round of each guest explaining who they are and what they do, and how they know me. George Sax was a surprise guest, bringing his saxophone 🎷 along, and Danish Soren was a late arrival. Soren and George stayed the longest, until it was time to leave for dancing.

George decided to join me at La Parada, driving in separate cars. Only one young girl danced at first, and it was George who encouraged me to come to the front and dance with them, so weird, as I was never inhibited in being the first to get onto the dance floor. DJ Rene Tanguy seemed to be in very good spirits, and played fabulous dance music in the last half an hour of his set, just like the old times of over a year ago. A guy called Chris recognized me from dancing there before, and proudly showed me the last Selfie we did together eight months ago. We took another one tonight. At first I was one of few persons present that wore my mask, as people were eating and drinking. But then I took mine off too, feeling much freer during the dancing. I had a brief chat with Eugene van Eck, also a throwback to the good old times.

The Kiffness played for an hour, and ‘Baker Street’ and ‘Sugarman’ are my two favorites, sung by Mathew Gold. It became very bumpy on the dance floor, so I left midway through their set, having heard the songs which I liked best. A fantastic Cardio workout, far better than my daily walking.

I was driving back home very carefully and noticed a taxi right on my tail all of a sudden, just outside Bakoven, it having driven very much faster than I to get so close to me. I slowed down, and then the taxi overtook me in a blind corner, and connected with my car, hearing a scraping sound. Thank goodness I didn’t lose control of the car, and couldn’t see any immediate marks or dents on my car when I got home. I will double check tomorrow. 😱

The Corona Virus Lockdown (Level 5), announced by our President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier to commence on 27 March and to continue until 16 April, subsequently extended to 30 April, lowered to Level 4 from 1 May, lowered to Level 3 from 1 June, lowered to Level 2 from 18 August, and lowered to Level 1 from 21 September, is an unprecedented event in my lifetime. I am posting my daily Facebook post to journal this Corona Lockdown Journey, perhaps to serve as material for a future Book.
