Franschhoek Literary Festival 2015: Social Media ‘the CCTV footage of our lives’, beware the legal consequences!

FLF Emma Sadleir, Rebecca Davis, Tom Eaton Whale CottageThe Franschhoek Literary Festival has never viewed Social Media as a serious literary genre, and its token recognition of writing on Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram is reflected in the event’s poor use of the medium to communicate with its audience of attendees and potential future visitors.  It is a shame that the two Social Media sessions overlapped so much, much of what was said on Friday being repeated on Saturday, not surprising in that two of the three speakers were the same persons.

Friday’s session was one of the Festival opening events, and was not as well attended as one would have thought, but the starting time may have been too early.  The target audience was not Continue reading →

Pick ‘n Pay Camps Bay Sweet Service and BP President Motors Sour Service Awards!

Pick 'n Pay logo 2The Sweet Service Award goes to Pick ‘n Pay Camps Bay and its Manager Gavin Grobler, for his assistance in the purchase of a watermelon.  The Garden’s Centre branch, which supplies our grocery requirements, did not have watermelons in stock.  I called the Camps Bay store, and received prices for whole and cut watermelons.  I told him that I would send my housekeeper Teresa to him, to buy a whole watermelon. Gavin was concerned that the watermelon was too heavy for her to carry, and sent one of his staff to carry it back to our guest house for her.  I Tweeted a thank you to Gavin and his branch, which message was passed on to him via their head office, resulting in him calling to thank me.  This excellent service came from a branch that has had a terrible service reputation in the past, prior to Gavin heading up the branch. City of Cape Town accused of subsidising Michael Bublé and One Direction concerts in Cape Town, did they benefit Tourism?!

One Direction concert Cape TownThe City of Cape Town has been accused by ANC councillors that the Michael Bublé and One Direction concerts, held earlier this year within ten days of each other in the City-owned Cape Town Stadium, were in part funded by the City, and ultimately its ratepayers!

Reported in Die Burger,  the article alleges that R2,1 million of ratepayers’ monies were used to pay for tickets and security for the 19 March Michael Bublé and 1 April One Direction concerts.  R243000 is alleged to have been paid to concert organiser ‘Big Concerts International’ (sic – the company is known as Big Concerts), a private company and dominant concert organiser in our country, for tickets, and close to R500000 for security, an expenditure which should have been the responsibility of the concert organiser.

At a Council meeting of the City on Thursday Acting Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Transport for Cape Continue reading →

Will Pharrell Williams be ‘Happy’ in his new association with Woolworths?

Woolworths Pharrel WilliamsWoolworths had barely announced its association with ‘Happy’ singer Pharrell Williams ten days ago when the retail store’s critics started questioning the rationale for the association, and encouraged Williams to reconsider his relationship. Pharrell is the new Style Director (whatever that may entail) of Woolworths!  The main question asked was why an American artist is to be used, when surely our country has an equally good role model. At a function last week a Woolworths executive explained the reason for Williams’ appointment.

To write this blogpost I Googled Woolworths and Pharrell Williams, and was Continue reading →
