The power of Twitter is phenomenal, and the World Cup is an excellent example of its communication power – every time a goal is scored, Twitter is over-capacity.   According to “The Ultimate List: 100 + Twitter Statistics”, a cumulative total of more than 10 billion tweets have been sent to date by a total of 106 million Twitterers, reports the Hubspot Blog.

The following Twitter statistics are included in the List:

1.  Only 10 % of internet users are on Twitter.

2.  Twitter has a 40 % user retention rate, the balance dropping out after only a month of signing up

3.   Most Tweets are sent between 10h00 – 22h00

4.   More Tweets are sent on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and the least on Saturdays and Sundays

5.   1% of what are called “addicted” Twitterers account for 35 % of all Twitter usage

6.   Demographically, Twitter users are equally male and female, and predominantly 18 – 34 years old.

7.   20 % of all Twitter accounts are inactive

8.   50 % of all Twitter users are “lazy”, not having tweeted in the past week

9.   5 % of Twitterers have more than 100 followers

10.  5 % of Twitter users create 75 % of the Tweets, called the “loudmouths”

11.   Tweets can be categorised as follows:

*   40 % are “inane”, alternatively described as “pointless babble”!

*   38 % of Tweets are “chatty”

*   Only 8 % of Tweets are “RT-worthy”

*   8 % of Tweets are “egotistical”

*    6 % of Tweets are spam
