From posting amateurish food preparation videos in his home kitchen at the beginning of Level 5 Lockdown, Chef Luke Dale Roberts is stepping up his game, entering the Food Delivery market as of 9 May, with a high-end Gourmet Hamper offering choice, making him the most expensive Delivery offering by far, bizarre in a time when every family is tightening its belts, given the economic catastrophe which the Corona Virus Lockdown is causing in our country.

At the beginning of April Chef Luke announced the permanent closure of one of his restaurants, The Shortmarket Club, and with it The Commissary:

Chef Luke Dale Roberts’ The Shortmarket Club restaurant the first Corona Virus victim, in closing for good!

In an SMS sent yesterday to past diners at the three restaurants in his LDR Group, The Test Kitchen, The Pot Luck Club, and Salsify at The Roundhouse, Chef Luke has announced the three Gourmet Hamper options:

#. The R1800 Gourmet Hamper A includes 14 items, with slow-smoked ocean Salmon,  duck and pork belly country pate, beef bourguignon, potted beetroot, apple chutney, assorted cheeses, rose-scented meringues, Berry compote, vanilla mascarpone, horseradish creme fraiche, cucumber and dill compote, mashed potato, and a chicken, leek and mushroom pie.

#. The R3000 Gourmet Hamper B includes 15 items, with juniper and citrus-cured salmon gravadlax, chicken liver and porcini parfait, prawn cocktail, lamb shank, Beef Wellington, rosemary and parmesan cream, mashed potato, fennel, apple and tarragon slaw, apple chutney, assorted cheeses, sour dough and baguette, trifle, burnt orange, pistachio frangipane, and vanilla mascarpone.

#. The R5000 Gourmet Hamper C consists of 20 items, with Beetroot tart, goat cheese mousse, olive tapenade, crayfish and Yuzu salad, duck and pork belly country pate, slow-smoked ocean trout fillet, celeriac and truffle salad, lamb shank pie, rosemary and Parmesan cream, Wagu (sic) rib-eye, mashed potato, black pepper and truffle cafe au last, horseradish crime fraiche, cucumber and dill compote, assorted cheeses, sourdough and baguette, chocolate fondant, tiramisu, poached pears in mulled wine, and vanilla mascarpone.

The notice sent describes the Gourmet Hampers as a ‘weekly basket of goods, pricing the final point for multiple meals’. It does not state for which family size it is intended, some desserts coming in portions of four, and the Beef Wellington in six portions. Each item on the Gourmet Hamper menus is described by weight. Delivery is promised two days from the date of payment receipt, with a time arranged, and may be delivered even sooner if possible. To the prices a delivery fee of R100 is added. The order form even requests a tip!

Hygiene procedures are detailed, in that staff temperatures will be taken three times a day, monitoring of each staff member for Corona Virus symptoms, 1,5 meter distancing, all staff wear face masks, washed daily, hands washed every 15 minutes, surfaces sanitized every 30 minutes with a paper towel, thrown away after use, and a daily deep clean of the facilities.   Driver hygiene procedures are not specified, and the delivery company/staff details not shared, Delivery is within the City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard, and the Southern Suburbs, oddly referred to as ‘South and Suburbs’.

Deliveries are done between 12h00 – 17h00 daily, and the content of each Gourmet Hamper is subject to change without notice. Clients are warned of allergens, including nuts, shellfish, and lactose, and that they eat the food items at their own risk.

Chef Luke Dale Roberts joins top chefs Peter Tempelhoff of FYN, Ryan Cole of his Salsify at The Roundhouse delivering in his personal capacity, and Arno Janse van Rensburg of Janse & Co, in delivering food ingredients and/or ready-made meals in Cape Town. I have created a Facebook Group listing all the restaurants that offer a Food Delivery Service in Cape Town and the Winelands.
