Much like Cape Town and the Winelands seeing at least 70 new restaurants having opened in the past 15 months since the Corona Lockdown began, so too Restaurants are opening in other parts of the world.

TimeOut has selected a handful of restaurants from around the world, curating a list of 21 restaurants from as far afield as Mexico City, Madrid, Lisbon, Montreal, Sydney, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Cape Town. The method of selecting the best new restaurants is not revealed, the majority of these being based in the USA.

I am delighted that it is ëlgr. that represents Cape Town, South Africa, and Africa on this elite TimeOut 2021 new restaurant list. Located on Kloof Street in Cape Town, in the former Janse & Co space at which its now Head Chef Jasper Nilsson and son of the owner of the building has created a refurbished space with a wonderful outside seating area.  His dishes are eclectic, with a most bizarre combination of ingredients, some not striking in their presentation, the service is superb, and return visits are acknowledged with a glass of something. The restaurant certainly has the most difficult to pronounce and remember name on the TimeOut list, meaning moose in Norwegian.

What to know: While the rest of us were guzzling wine and stocking up on sweatsuits during lockdown, chef Jesper Nilsson was dreaming up this effortlessly cool, deeply lovable restaurant – talk about an overachiever. The menu channels his Nordic upbringing while paying homage to Cape Town’s bounty of super-fresh ingredients. Everything’s designed to be shared and enjoyed with ease over good conversation – and who doesn’t want that after the year we’ve had? Better yet is the fact that Nilsson is hellbent on democratizing the workplace, with tip pooling, salaried employees and a flexible time-off policy.
