Musgrave Spirits has done very well at the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards, winning a Trophy as well as a Gold Award for its two Musgrave Copper infused pot-still brandies.

I attended a relaunch of Musgrave Copper two years ago, and loved its taste, both neat as well as in the cocktails we were given to try at the relaunch event.

Musgrave Spirits launches Musgrave Copper flavour-infused Vanilla and Black Honey Brandy, the ‘Bourbon’ of Brandy!

At the 2021 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards Musgrave Copper Black Honey Pot-still brandy won the Trophy for Most Innovative Product, while Musgrave Copper Vanilla infused pot-still brandy won a Gold Medal.

Known mainly for its Musgrave craft gin, and its pink gin in particular, the company launched two new luxurious pot-still brandy infusions three years ago. The Copper Vanilla and Copper Black Honey both won Gold at the SA Women’s Wine and Spirits Awards in 2019, and then earlier in 2021, Platter’s Wine Guide awarded the Copper Vanilla 4 stars and the Copper Black Honey 4 ½ stars.

According to Michelangelo’s Technical director, Dr Winnie Bowman, the Spirits categories presented a lot of out-the-box thinking this year, with truly South African products and eye-catching packaging despite a tough year for the industry. A total of 1890 wines and spirits were entered this year, including entries from various countries in Eastern Europe as well as Australia, Switzerland, Kenya, Zambia, Namibia, and the UK. A Michelangelo TROPHY winning wine or spirit represents both the top 1.1% of all entries received, as well as best in class. To be placed in the top 21 of 1,890 entries testifies to sublime, world-class quality and excellence.

“It’s such an honour to have our Copper so well received by the judges this year and to be acknowledged in this way. When I first launched, I wanted to shake up the industry and create a new genre that remixes the brandy category to play where cognac has feared to tread. I also wanted to attract the consumers that existed beyond the preconceptions of gender, age, or race. This award encapsulates the true essence of what drives us to develop brands that will disrupt and challenge the status quo. I think we can say it’s been a success’. said Simone Musgrave, owner of Musgrave Crafted Spirits.

Copper is luxurious, disruptive, infused and made to mix. It’s a flavour-infused brandy with subtle flavours and a distinctly African palate. Musgrave Copper is more aligned to the Cognac drinker than to a traditional Brandy drinker, using the finest pot-still brandy with added excitement of flavour-infusion. It also embraces a “remixing tradition” bringing together some of the African continents most celebrated ingredients. With access to a winter honey, collected by local communities within the national parks of Zambia and vanilla from the Indian Islands around the coast of Africa, the blends make for a sumptuous infusion that has elevated Musgrave Copper to the next level.  Appealing to a more female market, who are both daring and sophisticated, Musgrave Copper is hitting the mark while other brands trail behind.

Musgrave Spirits is launching its first Concept Store at EGG at Cavendish Square on Thursday.
