Tulbagh winery Saronsberg is our country’s top red wine producer when it comes to winning wine awards, its Full Circle being the most lauded red wine, followed by its Shiraz, over the past ten years.
SA’s top wines are ranked by The South African Wine Index SAWi’s ‘Algorithm of Excellence‘, which calibrates the scores of South African wines across 100 local and international competitions, ratings, reviews, and listings, over a rolling ten-year period, expressed out of a score of 100. This results in the South African Wine Ranking List.
Saronsberg Shiraz 2014 has won, amongst others, Double Gold in the Top 100 SA, Gold Concours Mondiall
de Bruxelles, Gold Decanter, Top12 in Shiraz SA Challenge, was rated 93 in the 2016 Tim Atkin’s Report Special South Africa, Gold Michelangelo, Gold IWSC, and Gold Veritas Award.
Saronsberg the Full Circle blend has been consistently awarded top red wine status, the 2014 vintage receiving a Top 100 SA Double Platinum, Gold Decanter, Gold IWC, IWC South African Red Wine Trophy 2016, and Double Gold at the 2016 Six Nations Championship.
Saronsberg prides itself on making wines first and foremost, and is not focused on winning awards. Winemaker Dewaldt Heyns has been specializing in Shiraz since his Elsenburg studies 21 years ago. But it is not only the wines which win acclaim. The Saronsberg Winery has won a number of awards, including Michelangelo, as producers of the year since 2010.
Dewaldt says of his top red wines: ‘Our red wines are a contemporary offering to the rich and historical Tulbagh valley. The wine speaks of our terroir and of our meticulous efforts in the vineyard and cellar‘.
