The 45th Two Oceans Marathon will be held on Saturday 4 April, and is synonymous with the Easter weekend in Cape Town. It is estimated that the event will contribute R266 million or more to the economy of Cape Town and the Western Cape. The marathon is described as the most beautiful in the world, with its route running along the Atlantic and Indian oceans.
In 1970 the Two Oceans Marathon was held for the first time, with only 24 runners. Now the race attracts 27000 runners, about half of them coming from outside the Western Cape. City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events, and Marketing Garreth Bloor said about the Marathon and its contribution to Cape Town: ‘The economic spin-offs of large events that attract domestic and international participants hold enormous benefits for the city and its residents. The ripple effect by way of job creation and the increased visitor spending in the city, coupled with the need for local associated services that benefit directly from these events, are all a welcome injection into the local economy‘. In addition to the contribution to the economy via accommodation, restaurant meals, car rental, and more, the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon attracting entries from 83 countries, and generating media coverage to the value of R10 million.
The 56 km Ultra Marathon starts outside SA Breweries in Newlands, and its traditional route via Chapman’s Peak (according to the event website, but we have been told by runners that it is going through Ou Kaapse Weg), 
Hout Bay, and Constantia Nek will be run on Saturday. The 21 km Half Marathon also starts outside SA Breweries, runs through the Southern Suburbs, and ends at UCT . Musician Jimmy Nevis will run the Half Marathon, while Ethiopian world class runner Haile Gebrselasie will be supporting runners from the sidelines, attending as a guest of sponsor adidas.
While Camps Bay is on the other side of the mountain from the Two Oceans Marathon route, we are delighted that the Mossop and Koofhethile families have chosen Whale Cottage Camps Bay as their base over the Easter weekend, in participating in the Two Oceans Marathon today.
