Is it just me, but doesn’t it feel like a superb summer holiday day at 24 C, with swimmers in the Tidal Pool, picnickers coming to the Bakoven beaches at sunset, and one having a good start to the weekend? 😊🌞⭐️

Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato and Western Cape Premier Alan Winde express shock at heavy-handed Police action against peaceful Restaurant and Tourism industry protest in Cape Town this morning!

 

Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato expressed his shock at the treatment of Restaurant and Tourism industry staff, when they participated in a peaceful demonstration outside Parliament at 10h00 this morning: ‘I am appalled at video footage showing the aggressive conduct of the South African Police Service (SAPS) today as they used heavy handed tactics against peaceful hospitality industry protesters outside parliament this morning’.

I was slightly late for the start of the protest, and in walking past staff of Hudson’s in Kloof Street, they told me that the Police were prepared for the demonstration and started shooting water cannons and tear gas at the Restaurant and Tourism Industry representatives peacefully forming a human chain, with Social Distancing of 1,5 meters apart, outside Parliament. This action led to the peaceful demonstration being brought to an abrupt halt, and staff returning to their restaurants and businesses, angry, and severely disappointed with the police action and in the Government! Corona Virus: Strict (but confusing) new Law for licensed Restaurants, Clubs, Shebeens, and Bars announced!

 

A report just seen on News24 states that the Government has announced that all licensed restaurants, shebeens, clubs, and bars have to close their doors at 18h00 on Mondays to Saturdays, and at 13h00 on Sundays and public holidays, with immediate effect. This is a devastating announcement for the hospitality industry which was not addressed  by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech on Sunday evening. Hotels have been instructed to take greater care to prevent and to contain the spread of the COVID-19 Virus in their establishments. Continue reading →

Restaurant Review: Coco Safar lunch and dinner experiences chalk and cheese!

A lunch at Coco Safar, followed by a dinner three days later, were two chalk and cheese experiences, the former excellent and the latter hugely disappointing, especially as it was a birthday dinner treat for a special friend! I had last been to Coco Safar for breakfast early this year, after it opened in Sea Point, having moved from Cavendish Square.  Continue reading →
