Chef Bertus Basson is ā€˜In die Sop: Restaurant Evolusieā€™, a restaurant turn-around TV series, including that of controversial journalist Jacques Pauw!

 

I cannot resist writing a story about Chef Bertus Bassonā€™s latest TV series, ā€˜In die Sop: Restaurant Evolusieā€™ on kykNet, a Gordon Ramsay-style ā€˜Kitchen Nightmaresā€™ reality TV series in which restaurants are given 72 hours in which to be transformed. Ā It is aired on Wednesdays on KykNet at 20h00, the first episode airing last week. The title of the series ā€˜In die Sopā€™ refers to restaurants being in trouble.

The irony is that Basson himself has been no expert in restaurant design when one considers his ā€˜crapā€™ Spek & Bone off Dorp Street (one of the most widely read reviews on my Blog), and De Vrije Burger on Plein Street, both in Stellenbosch. Surprisingly, Basson admits to his restaurant faults: ā€˜Iā€™ve achieved great success, but Iā€™ve also made a lot of mistakes and learned lessons that have cost me dearly. #Grateful for a lovely relaxed day; for finding Version 3 of the Jacques Pauwgate story on Daily Maverick this morning , and having to post it, the Waterfront restaurant now named; for a litter clean up with Imtiaz, from Bakoven through the lanes and steps to Camps Bay Drive this morning, and cleaning at the Tidal Pool this afternoon again; for collecting my free copy of Daily Maverick 168 at Pick n Pay; for a Skype meeting with the Canadian Tour Guiding Tour Operator and fellow Committee members from around the world, making me grateful for the amount of Lockdown freedom we have in our country compared to many other countries; for Jenny Stephens joining me for dinner at Anatoli Turkish Restaurant, a fun evening with lots of good food; and for being happy and healthy. šŸ™šŸ’™ Continue reading →

Jacques Pauw Daily Maverick debacle: Version 3 reveals Den Anker as the Waterfront restaurant in the centre of the shitstorm!

 

On Tuesday I posted the story from Daily Maverick about investigative journalist Jacques Pauw claimed wrongful arrest for not paying his bill at an then unnamed Waterfront restaurant, arrested by the police, and spending part of a weekend in a holding cell. This was followed a few days later by a retraction of the story on Twitter by Pauw, describing a completely different set of circumstances, taking full responsibility for the events, and apologising to one and all involved.

Daily Maverick has been at great pains to explain its journalistic procedures and fact checking what took place when it allowed Pauw to post the story in its medium. Not only did Pauw not retract his story in the same publication in which his story first appeared, but Pauwā€™s actions caused the publication severe negative publicity. It has parted ways with Pauw as one of its contributing journalists.Ā  Continue reading →
