SA Chef: Chris von Ulmenstein: ‘The Food Critic Chefs love to hate’


I met Riana Andrews, Editor of SA Chef, at a recent function hosted by the Finnish Embassy in Pretoria, in Constantia. She expressed interest in writing a profile about me, and contracted Rebecca Bourhill, chef, blogger, and food writer, to do so for SA Chef magazine.

SA Chef is the official voice of the South African Chefs Association, which has close to 10000 chefs, restaurateurs, educators, learners and culinarians  as members. Its focus is on skills development of the industry. Continue reading →

Twelve SA Restaurants make La Liste 1000 Top Restaurant List, Restaurant Klein JAN receives special award!


At a Gala Event held in Paris on Monday, the new La Liste 1000 for 2022 was announced, with 12 South African Restaurants included in this prestigious list of 1000 top restaurants around the world, one sadly included but no longer operating!

In addition, brand new Restaurant Klein JAN at Tswalu in the Kalahari, owned by Chef Jan-Hendrik van  der Westhuizen, received a special Award as World Hidden Gem Restaurant. While his JAN restaurant in Nice has been awarded one Michelin star for the past six years,
it is not included in the La Liste List.  The La Liste accolade for Restaurant Klein JAN, and its inclusion in the world’s Top 1000 List, is the first international recognition for any of Chef Jan-Hendrik’s restaurants. Continue reading →

#grateful for a lovely rainy start to the day; warming up to become a humid day, but cold now and more rain on the way tomorrow; for zero Loadshedding today after a heavy shedding week 😱; for a working morning; for my Dinkel poppyseed roll stop; for enough time to have my favorite Appeltaart at Labotessa and seeing owner Johann du Plessis there; for a quick shop at Fideli’s, seeing the newly engaged owner Chef Judi Fourie there; for a good Status meeting for Anatoli and Utopia, doing so well ; so happy that clients of mine loved the JAN experience in Nice last night 🙏 for a refreshing walk to the Tidal Pool; and for being happy, healthy, and free. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

‘SA’s most experienced Restaurant Reviewer : accolade from IconicZA magazine!


In my ‘career’ as a writer I have been called many things by not so nice persons in the restaurant industry. It has been a wonderful experience to have new descriptors added to the collection describing me: ‘indomitable’, meaning impossible to subdue or defeat, and  ‘most experienced restaurant reviewer’, both accolades by the new IconicZA digital magazine in an article in its October issue.
