Corona Gratitude 🙏

#grateful for a fabulous day, not only the 22 C sunny day, but also relaxed, getting all my work done; for a good night’s sleep, still not able to believe how quiet it is in our building 💙; for buying a stockpile of cat food, given the shortage of Whiskas, having to drive to Pick n Pay down the road, doing a monthly shop which I haven’t done in years, not doing it again in a hurry, with errors on their specials, it taking longer to do the refund than to take my payment đŸ˜±; for a walk to Bakoven; Continue reading →

Two Cape Town Restaurants ranked in World’s 50 Best Restaurants Top 100 List!

After having skipped the release of the World’s 50 Best Restaurant List in 2020, due to the Corona pandemic, the 2021 World’s 50 Best Restaurant List is back.

The closure of The Test Kitchen on Thursday means that South Africa may no longer have a presence on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants List, only La Colombe and The Test Kitchen, both under the ownership of Chef Luke Dale Roberts, having received the prestigious accolade of having made this list in the past. The 2021 World’s 50 Best List will be announced on 5 October.

Luckily the World’s 50 Best has a bubbling-under List, the World’s Restaurants ranked from 51 to 100 already having been announced. Cape Town’s La Colombe and Fyn restaurants have made it onto this list. Continue reading →

The Test Kitchen to close down end September, Third Top 10 Restaurant to close down in 18 months!

What a shock announcement it was today: The Test Kitchen, South Africa’s best known restaurant internationally, having climbed up (and down) the World’s 50 Best Restaurants ladder over the past 11 years, and having worn the Best South African Restaurant crown for six years running, until 2017, is to close down at the end of September. This was announced in Cape Town today.

Top Ten restaurants which have also closed down since the beginning of Lockdown are Mosaic at The Orient and Waterkloof.  Ironically both Mosaic and The Test Kitchen announced in 2019 that they would no longer accept nominations for The Eat Out Awards, the 2019 awards being the last to have taken place, due to the Covid pandemic and impact thereof on the restaurant industry since the Lockdown commenced on 27 March 2020.

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for hordes of rain overnight and today, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, but not as dramatic as it sounded, expected for the whole morning, but it was short-lived; for the comfort of my bed, in which I wrote this morning, with Minsky lying next to me to keep warm; for the size of our garage here, allowing me to do a good number of steps before the sun came out for a while, so that I could do a walk to the Beachfront and back, not getting as wet on my walk as I did yesterday; for the brandy I have in my home to add to my tea to warm myself up inside; for having my own home-made soup in the fridge, sharing some with Henry at lunchtime; for feeling happy and healthy. 🙏💙 Continue reading →
