Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers Summer Pop-up Food Truck opens on Camps Bay Beachfront!

Ten days ago Restaurateur and Camps Bay resident Ian Halfon, co-owner of the Slick Group, opened a Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers Summer pop-up Food Truck inside the parking area of the Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, not only selling their well-known burgers but also delicious ice creams and milkshakes.

The Gibson’s Food Truck is located in the centre of the Camps Bay Beachfront, clients accessing the ordering hatch via steps leading up to a platform on the Victoria Road pavement.

Wanting to check it out, after reading about it opening on Facebook, I bumped into Ian, and he immediately invited me to enjoy one of the four burger options offered, he taking care of the order, being a Cheeseburger, a packet of fries, and a strawberry milkshake.

He took me to a seating area on the inside of the parking area, which the Bay Hotel has prepared for him, with a number of tables and chairs, and with a superb view onto the Atlantic Ocean. There is also seating on the Victoria Road pavement on both sides of the entrance into the hotel grounds.

Gibson’s has operated in the Waterfront for the past nine years.

Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers and Ribs pop-up Food Truck in Camps Bay offers Beach Burgers, Beach Cheese Burgers, Classic Burgers, Classic Cheese Burgers, Chicken Burgers, and Plant-based Burgers, ranging in price from R50 – R75. In addition, golden fries and beverages are available.

It also offers creamy Soft Serve ice cream in various variations, including plain with a cone, plain with a Flake, chocolate dipped, and caramel dipped, ranging in price from R15 – R25. They are available in a cup too, starting at R20. Strawberry, Vanilla, Oreo cookie, Peppermint Crisp, and Bar One Chocolate Gourmet Milkshakes cost R55.

At the Waterfront, Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers and Ribs offers 36 Burger alternatives, and 207 gourmet milkshakes with 60 toppings, Gibson’s offering the largest number of milkshake varieties available in the world.

It has a separate Steak Menu, offering 28 day matured steaks. Rump and Sirloin cost R170 for 250 grams, R200 for a 250 gram Fillet,  and R255 for a 250 gram 28 day matured grain-fed T-bone. Lamb  Mixed Grill  insists of lamb chop, lamb rib, fried egg, fries, and beef boerewors, at R149. All the Steak Menu items are offered with a choice of fries or baked potato.

Ian described what makes the Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers so unique and special: the brioche bun is baked in-house and topped with an egg-wash. It is lightly toasted in a Prince Castle toaster. The Burger Patty is pressed by hand, with mince which is made in-house with an industrial mincer. A special Gibson’s Basting sauce is used to grill the  Burger. Each Burger is made with layers of 24-hour sweet and sour pickled cucumber, chopped lettuce, tomato, onions caramelised in butter, the Gibson’s number 6 special sauce, with the Burger patty in the middle.  Its fries are sprinkled with a seasoning salt which is MSG-free.

The Slick Group operates according to the Gold Standard Food Safety and Hygiene, offering its clients peace of mind. This includes frequent fogging with Covid-19 compliant sanitiser, staff being continuously monitored and temperatures taken on arrival, hand sanitisation implemented continuously, ingredients used in its meal preparation are sanitised, only Gibson’s staff is allowed into the kitchens, gloves are worn by food handlers, tables and chairs are sanitised, and menus are sanitised after use.  The Menu can be read by QR code.
