*   Google has announced that it will launch driverless automatic cars in five years from now.  The company is working with American authorities to test the safety of these cars.

*   The SA economy could grow by 2,1% this year, a better growth rate than that of 2014, with lower oil prices, higher consumer spend, fewer strikes, lower inflation rate, and a small interest rate hike later this year.  Barclays Africa economist Peter Worthington says that the growth rate could be even higher, were it not for Eskom’s loadshedding!

*   Food prices could fall this year due to the decreasing oil and therefore fuel price, reducing inflation, but not by much, it is predicted.  Decreasing fuel prices should lead to decreased bread and maize meal prices.   Meat prices could fall by between 2 – 5%.

*   Grande Provence is hosting the Dutch opera group Pasta e Basta in its cellar for an evening of food, wine, and song, on 30 January.  In Amsterdam the singers work for the Pasta e Basta restaurant, all being trained opera singers. In Franschhoek they will be supported in song by the Ikamva Vocal Ensemble from Khayalitsha. Chef Darren Badenhorst will serve a long-table Italian dinner. Cost is R495, and includes a glass of Prosecco. (received via media release from GC Communications)

*   The Riesling & Rarities Rock Festival will be held at Hartenberg Wines on 31 January, showcasing premier Weisser and Rhine Riesling wines, as well as gourmet deli fare with charcuterie, breads, and picnics.  For the first time rare varietals Semillon, Viognier, and Gewürztraminer will be available to taste.  Live entertainment.  Entrance costs R120, tickets available via Webtickets.
