The Eat Out Restaurant Awards were held for the first time in three years today, an eagerly awaited event, given the impact of the Lockdown on the restaurant industry, and the change in the restaurant awards system, restaurants no longer ranked, but rated with 1, 2 or 3 stars.

It was a surprise to read a year ago that Eat Out would reintroduce its Awards this year, and that Abigail Donnelly was heading up the judging for the awards again, after an absence of a number of years. Continue reading →

Corona Virus: Lockdown Journey Journal, Day 28 of Level 1, 28 October 2021.

Thursday 28 October 2021, Day 28 of Level 1 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#grateful for making the best of today, with 5 hours of my working day being affected by Loadshedding, using some of it to catch up on sleep, a walk in Bakoven, and shopping at Ultra (looking very different) and Spar (looks like a mini-Ultra when you walk in); for getting my Dinkel rolls and free range eggs; for doing a large part of my writing after the first Loadshedding this morning, at 2h30 😱; for a good meeting for Utopia and Anatoli, with a spoil of biscuits for tea, I joking with my client that they were to celebrate my first anniversary of working on the Utopia Continue reading →

New restaurants open, one Restaurant Closure, in Cape Town and Winelands since March! April 2021

The Level 1 regulations introduced on 1 March, with a restaurant closing time of 23h00, and the serving of alcohol being permitted since February, have been a boost to the local restaurant industry, one of the hardest hit industries since Lockdown started a year ago.

Despite the Lockdown regulations affecting restaurants so badly in the past 11 months, a total of 70 new restaurants have opened in Cape Town and the Winelands during Lockdown. Top chefs have opened new restaurants, including Chefs Peter Tempelhoff, Cheyne Morrisby, and Liam Tomlin. Chef Cheyne’s HIMITSU at the Camps Bay Retreat is one of the newest restaurants to have opened. Cape Town’s oldest pub, the Perseverance Tavern, has reopened with new owners. Restaurateur Michael Townsend has finally opened his grand Grand Pavilion in Sea Point.  Chef Michael Broughton has opened Cucina in Stellenbosch, and plans to open The Stud Burger, Ember, and a Tapas and wine bar, all in Stellenbosch, and all in conjunction with Brenaissance Wine & Stud owners Tom and Hayley Breytenbach. Chef Jan-Hendrik has finally opened KLEIN JAN at Tswalu Kalahari.  Continue reading →

New Level 1 Curfew starting time a bonus for Cape Town & Winelands Restaurants: March 2021.

The revised Level 3 regulations introduced at the beginning of February, permitting the sale of alcohol and the closing time moved to 22h00, has been a boost for the restaurant industry, experiencing a good past month. The new restaurant closing time of 23h00 since yesterday is certain to be a further boost for a very hard-hit restaurant industry.

Despite the Lockdown regulations affecting restaurants so badly in the past 11 months, a total of 68 new restaurants have opened in Cape Town and the Winelands during Lockdown. Top chefs have opened new restaurants, including Chefs Peter Tempelhoff, Cheyne Morrisby, and Liam Tomlin. Chef Cheyne’s HIMITSU at the Camps Bay Retreat is the newest restaurant to have opened. Cape Town’s oldest pub, the Perseverance Tavern, has reopened with new owners.

The latest permanent Lockdown Restaurant Closure list stands at 97 Restaurants in Cape Town and the Winelands. Sadly one of the greatest casualties of Covid and the Lockdown is the closure of The Restaurant at Waterkloof, as are the closures of Balducci’s and Belthazar in the Waterfront and La Tête on Bree Street.  Clarke’s, The Shortmarket Club, Koffi Terapi, Ocean Blue, and Dahlia on Regent announced their permanent closure earlier in Lockdown, but have since reopened. Fork in Franschhoek is the latest closure.

The Test Kitchen, and The Food Barn have changed their offerings and their restaurant names in reaction to the Covid Lockdown. They have recently been joined by Chefs Warehouse and Canteen on Bree Street, now called Chefs Warehouse Winebar & Pinchos.

The Test Kitchen and The Foodbarn Restaurants transformed to cope with aftermath of Covid Lockdown!

Franschhoek saw a number of Lockdown Restaurant Closures, but has five new restaurant openings, some restaurants have relocated, and some have changed their offering. See note about the closure of Fork above.

More Restaurants closing, some temporarily, due to new Adjusted Level 3 Lockdown: January 2021

Just when news about restaurants closing down during Lockdown had almost ground to a halt, eight restaurants in Cape Town in the past week have announced their closure, some temporary, due to the new Adjusted Level 3 Lockdown which commenced on 29 December 2020.  The Curfew starting at 21h00, Restaurants having to close at 20h00, and alcohol sales not being allowed, combined with diners’ fear of the greater spreadability of the mutated Corona Virus, is affecting restaurant turnovers harshly.

Despite the Lockdown regulations affecting restaurants so badly in the past nine months, a total of 66 new restaurants have opened in Cape Town and the Winelands during Lockdown. Top chefs are opening new restaurants, including Chefs Peter Tempelhoff and Liam Tomlin. Continue reading →

More than 60 Restaurants in Cape Town/Winelands have opened since start of Lockdown, Closures grind to a halt! December 2020

News about restaurants closing down during Lockdown has almost ground to a halt, which is good news in itself. Even better news is that a number of new restaurants have opened or are planning to open in Cape Town and the Winelands, the latest count being 61 new restaurants.

The latest Lockdown Restaurant Closure list stands at 83 Restaurants in Cape Town and the Winelands, an increase of only one Restaurant Closure in the past month. Sadly the greatest casualty of Covid and the Lockdown is the recent closure of The Restaurant at Waterkloof.  Clarke’s, The Shortmarket Club, Koffi Terapi,  Ocean Blue, and Dahlia on Regent announced their permanent closure earlier in Lockdown, but have since reopened.

Top chefs are opening new restaurants, including Chefs Peter Tempelhoff and Liam Tomlin. The Test Kitchen and The Food Barn have changed their offerings and their restaurant names in reaction to the Covid Lockdown.

Chef Peter Tempelhoff goes beyond Fyn to launch beyond Restaurant at Buitenverwachting!

It was a surprise to read that Chef Peter Tempelhoff is to open his second restaurant beyond, at Buitenverwachting in Constantia. This follows the success of his Fyn restaurant in the city centre, which he opened two years ago. He is to open a Street Food restaurant on Shortmarket Street sometime soon too.

Chef Peter has not revealed many details about beyond, as to the opening date, and where exactly it will open on the wine estate. But we do know the name of the Chef heading up the kitchen as well as that of the interior designer of the new restaurant, who also designed the FYN interior.
