Corona Virus: Lockdown Journey Journal, Day 48 of Level 1, 17 April 2021.

Saturday 17 April 2021, Day 48 of Level 1 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for another summer day forecast at 24C which became a 28C one; for a very relaxed day, starting off with a tea and croissant treat with Vivian Warby at Firefly, being addressed by Daniella Kisten of Minted Ginger, supplier of Chef uniforms and aprons from a neighbouring table, leading to an interesting restaurant catch-up, promising each other a tea date; for a beautiful turquoise blue ocean today, very calm and almost flat; for hearing the ‘Love my Life’ song by Robbie Williams for the first time, with amazing words, a song of self-affirmation, including ‘I am Free’, something I’ve never expressed gratitude for before, #thankyou Linda Gotlieb 🌹; for being able to see The Funeral of Prince Philip at 4 pm our time, finding it by chance via a German TV channel, so moving, despite its small size, with its ending of William, Harry, and Kate walking together in leaving the Chapel ❤️; for a power walk up the 100 Houghton Steps, gaining 300 points, bringing me closer to my goal of points to achieve by the end of this month; for the amazing surprise of there being almost no litter, having come armed with a garbage bag; for my Bakoven sunset pic of earlier this week being posted by Daily Maverick today (Photograph above); and for being happy, healthy, and free. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

Corona Virus: Lockdown Journey Journal, Day 33 of Level 2, 19 September 2020.;

Saturday 19 September 2020, Day 33 of Level 2, Day 175 of Lockdown. 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for a super sunny day, not a cloud, and a warm 19C in the sun, but chilly now as the wind has turned North-West, bringing us rain tomorrow; for a successful Camps Bay Clean this morning, with a lovely community spirit; for a two-hour Vit D sizzle in the sun on my terrace; for another Camps Bay walk this afternoon, to shop at Pick n Pay, disappointed that there was so much litter after we had cleaned it up so nicely this morning 😱😢; for a catch up chat with Jenny Stephens this morning, not having seen her in a week, she being very busy; for dancing to Kfm 💃; and for being happy and healthy. 💙🙏 Continue reading →

Corona Virus: Lockdown Journey Journal, Day 21 of Level 2, 7 September 2020.

Monday 7 September 2020, Day 21 of Level 2, Day 165 of Lockdown 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for another beautiful day, at 22C, summer is almost here, but not for long; for a happy sunshine spirit after all the grey rain days; for a good admin and writing morning; for a call to Verishnee Mayer; for a sunny walk through Camps Bay, popping in at Firefly Café, checking if they got their tea ordered from Dilmah, at Tindlovu to check a menu detail with its GM Chris Papayannes, and at Ivor Ramsay at Law Enforcement to assist a local resident deal with a tented settlement going up opposite her house; for a visit from Ines, who cycled all the way from Hout Bay to buy SwitchBitch Book 1, having connected with each other via Facebook, she being very interested in local restaurants too; for loving my new black shorts I bought at Pick n Pay Clothing, fitting perfectly and comfortably, not having been able to try them on in the shop, so much so that I’m going to buy another pair 💙; for a sunset walk through Bakoven; for meeting a township gardener in town to buy two lemon trees, going into pots; for receiving a copy of Sommelier and winemaker Jean Vincent Ridon’s new book ‘Passion for Pairing’, personally hand delivered, for reviewing; for no Loadshedding for us today;  and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

Unbanning of alcohol sales is not preventing Cape Town & Winelands restaurants from closing down, yet a few new ones are bravely opening! (September 2020)

On my latest Restaurant Closure list I have more than 70 Restaurants in Cape Town and the Winelands which have closed down, an increase of 20 Restaurant Closures in the past month. Sadly the unbanning of Alcohol has not prevented further Restaurant Closures in Cape Town and the Winelands in the past month.

The Restaurant Closure and Opening Lists are updated continuously throughout the month.

The Restaurant industry is one of the hardest hit due to the Corona Virus in South Africa, having had to endure five weeks of complete closure, then restricted to Food Deliveries in May, allowed to offer Alcohol Sales and Food Collections during June, and now allowed to offer Sit-Down Service without on-site alcohol consumption since Monday 29 June.  As an industry employing an estimated 800000 employees, the UIF and TERS problems it has had to endure in receiving (or not) staff payment has exacerbated the state of the restaurant industry, described by Chefs Warehouse Chef Liam Tomlin earlier this week as being reduced to nothing more than one of Coffee shops! A number of restaurants have decided to reopen for Sit-Down Service for the first time since the Lockdown, given that they can now offer on-site consumption of alcoholic beverages, while some will continue to offer the Delivery and Collection of Food.

A shock closure announced by Chef Luke Dale Roberts during Lockdown Level 5 was that of The Shortmarket Club.  Myoga at the Vineyard Hotel, Buitenverwachting Restaurant (under the guidance of Chef Edgar Osojnik for the past 20 years), The Stack, Clarke’s, Exhibit A of top chef Rikku O’Donnchü, Terroir at Klein’s Zalze, and The Kitchen of Karen Dudley have also thrown in the towel, with many other Restaurants too.  (see below)

New restaurant openings seem unlikely in the next few months, with winter lying ahead, and restaurant cash flows depleted due to the Corona Lockdown. Chef Peter Tempelhoff announced the opening of a new ‘funky’ restaurant in Cape Town on Kfm a few months ago, but no further details of its name, location, or opening date are known. A good news story is the reopening of Tintswalo Kitchen, with a new name, new menu, and headed up by Executive Chef Sean Klebbe, formerly of The Shortmarket Club. Surprisingly Chef Arno Janse van Rensburg has left his own restaurant Janse & Co, but his future plans have not yet been revealed, other than that his next venture will be in Cape Town. The Village n Life Group, owners of The Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, Pezula in Knysna, and The Farmhouse Hotel in Langebaan, is looking for ‘dynamic operational teams to take over incredible restaurant spaces’.
