Spate of new restaurant openings in Cape Town & Winelands, Greenhouse closure: November 2021

 

With the country at Level 1 for over a month, the restaurant tide is turning, with business in the restaurant industry is improving.

For the first time in a number of months a number of new restaurants are opening in Cape Town and the Winelands, including Rykaarts Stellenbosch, MiCaffé in Bree Street with more restaurants about to open in The Barracks, and in Camps Bay Beach House, Bovine, The Pottery, and Cause & Effect are opening this month.

Since the beginning of Lockdown 19 months ago, 114 new restaurants have opened.

Very few recent Restaurant openings and closures in Cape Town and Winelands: September 2021

 

Despite the dreadful impact on restaurants of Level 4 during July, no restaurants appeared to have closed.  By the end of September Chef Luke Dale Roberts will have closed all his restaurants. He will consult to Ethos in Johannesburg.

Chef Bertus Basson is on a continuous Restaurant opening spree, having opened Geuwels at Vergenoegd Löw in Stellenbosch at the beginning of this month, with Chef Drikus heading up the kitchen. It is open Wednesdays to Sundays, for Breakfast and Lunch. Continue reading →

Lockdown Level 4 a major setback to Cape Town & Winelands Restaurants just getting back on their feet again! July update

 

Last month I reported how well the restaurant industry was doing, booming since being allowed to serve alcohol again since February, and that two new top restaurants were opening in June:  Utopia Co-owner Executive Chef Pavel Dimitrov opened Zest Restaurant in the new kings boutique hotel in Piazza da Luz in Sea Point, and Homespun Chef Matt Schreuder opened his second Homespun, at the Andros Boutique Hotel in Claremont (Photograph).

The Lockdown Level 4 regulations announced a week ago to curb the Covid Third Wave, closing restaurants until 11 July and only allowing Food Collection and Delivery, is having a devastating effect on the industry, two new closures announced during this past week. Many restaurants have closed and are giving their staff annual leave. Many have done the sums and cannot reach or exceed the breakeven point.
